Since my Dell Dimension w/ P3 600MHz is helplessly crawling to boot-up Win98 SE, and several of my application, I think it's time for me to pass it on to my daughter for her Toddler & Pre-K games. Now I want a new one but I want it to be my very first build, I still can't decipher though wheather to get P4 2.6C or AMD64 3000+. I do a lot of datadase programming, gaming, and some video editing (analog home movies into DVDs). I want a cost effective upgrade in the future.

Epox/Abit Nforce2 motherboard
AMD XP2500+ Barton (overclock to 3200+ speeds)
512mb PC3200 RAM (minimum)
Video card of your choosing

motherboard - ASUS P4C800-E
P4 2.6C 800fsb (can overclock nicely if needed)
i would reccomend 1gb of at least PC3200 or faster - you preference but, either corsair, crucial, kingston,OCZ,Geil,Mushkin are good
Video card probably a ATI 9800 - several models your choice

I would go for the AMD, but the 2.6 will oc nicely, but I'd save a little and get the 2.4c, you can oc that to speeds well above what you will need. Don't get a 9800 card unless it is a NP, the extra $ isn't worth it. The 9700 Pro costs less and is just about as good a performer. The 9600 Pro @ close to $150 would be a great card for you to get too, you will see a tremendous difference from your old setup.

I would definitely recommend the A64 3000+... its a steal and should overclock at least to A643200+ speeds, and beats the intel cpus at similar speeds
