HELP! Need new Monitor

OUCH

Banned
Welp, I need a new Monitor. I had a Hitachi CM752 for 2 years, I like how the text are really clear but the image is a bit dark, had a chance to buy a Sony G400 for less than 350 so I bought it.. This thing is great image quality, really really bright white. BUT the text just sucks @ 1600 x 1200.. So now I'm in the market again for a new Monitor.

I prefer a flat screen, don't want any curves, a refresh rate of 85hz @ 1600 x 1200 or higher. Has a detachable 15 pin connector, great geometry, great text and great colors. Any idea? So was wondering if any of you guys can suggest, a great 17 - 21 inch monitor.

For a nice 24" monitor, I suggest the Sony GDM W900. It's a nice widescreen, wide-aspect ratio monitor. If you want a more reasonably priced one, go for the 19" Sony GPD-400. Sony's are all good 🙂

It is quite possible the bad text quality is due to your video card. Geforce cards usually have quite bad 2d quality and the Hercules is no exception. The G400 is a great monitor and some consider it the best 19" monitor (well other than the discotinued F400) so if a friend or something has a card with better 2d quality like a Radeon, Matrox, or even Voodoo 5. Actually, I'm surprised you just noticed the bad 2d quality of a Geforce2 now...

Heya Ouch,
I use the Hitachi SuperScan 812. It is a 21" Hitachi that can do 85hz @ 1600 x 1200 or higher. But there is also the 813/etc that are higher end. You mentioned you had a Hitachi and liked it, I don't see why you don't get another then? The only problem is mine isn't flat screen. Here is Hitachi's flatscreen model, I'm not sure how good it is: SuperScan823F

Also, I have a Geforce1 and run 1600x1200x32 on my Hitachi and the text is good. Although some Geforces do have poor text, if you had that same Geforce card in your old Hitachi and didn't notice poor text I would blaim the monitor also.

See I don't think it's the Video Card (it could be) cause the only time the texts are blurry is when it's @ the four corners, or above the top faint line or below the bottom faint line, other than that anywhere else is clear

Well, creaking along here on my old Hitachi 751 🙂, I'll just point out one thing I've read a lot on the boards here.

Your Hitachi uses an Invar Shadow mask, while the Sony is an Aperature Grille.
From everything I've read, AG is great at colors and pictures and a little less so at text.
ISM is great at text, but a little less so for color and pictures.

Having never used an AG I can't say for sure though, but you might want to stick with an ISM tube.

I can say the Radeon's 2d quality far surpasses that of the GeForce2, as my GF2 will be up for sale soon, lol.

The LG Flatron 915FT (19&quot😉 is worth looking at,fits your specs 1600x1200 85hz,flat screen etc, gives the best of both types of shadow mask & aperture grill without those aperture grill lines ,it uses new flat slot mask CDT tube also at a great price.

🙂

Before you blame the blurry text on the monitor, what's your graphics card? There have been numerous rumors that NVidia video cards suffer from blurriness at higher resolutions. There is an article that addresses it right here.
