Is HIIT better than a standard cardio workout? On John Squall's website, he said he tried Max-OT and didn't like it.

I use Max-OT, it is a solid program. It's nothing new, but then again the simplest workouts tend to be the most effective.

I would also recommend checking out AST's website for an updated version of the program as well as tons of Q&A on training, diet, etc.:

HIIT is awesome, and a good alternative who don't like doing long cardio. The basic idea is that you are doing exactly what the acronym stands for. High Intensity Interval Training.

The workout is usually under twenty minutes. Pick the aerobic excercise you want to train in: running, biking, eliptical, whatever. Warm up for five minutes, then go all out for 30 seconds. Continue moving but slow down to your warm up speed for 3 minutes. Then go all out again for 30 seconds...back down to warm up for another 3 minutes.

Repeat this process five times or so...times obviously can vary to whatever works for you. Point is the level of intensity you are reaching. It really should be your at absolute upper limit when you are sprinting.

The principle is that this type of excercise gets your metabolism super-revving, and this lasts for an entire day, burning more calories than say an hour of cardio might. As such, it's not the best excercise for people who are trying to expand their aerobic abilities, like a long distance runner. I think it's best for people who are trying to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time, because HIIT won't eat away at your muscle like long, distance training does
