Name: Logitech M510
Con: Wireless USB
Z-Axis: about 5mm

I wouldn't expect any other mice to be able to get much higher than that.

What you should probably be working on is using whatever mouse you have, dis-assemble it, and playing with the lenses to change the focal length/distances.

Older mice, with visible lasers, like the MX500, you could probably get to work at about 3 inches above the surface, mine worked at about 15mm above the surface... not accurately, but... moved the cursor.

Simpler solution. Get a trackball or use an xbox controller? Either that or use a touchscreen tablet?

... encoder is for location awareness, hence, self control/anonymous robot, this entire robot is design/constucted by me for my thesis ; every single circuit board excluding Kinect, <-- the only element that is off shelf!

I see. Well, in that case, I got nothing. :)

(Cool project, btw. Best of luck to you.)
