I've had to build a low-cost PC for my dad, and with the tiny budget available ($120), I managed to get a Celly 300, 256MB, 20GB, Aureal2 card, DVDrom drive etc... mostly stuff from used market. For gfx card I found an old RIVA128 card (Diamond Viper 330).

This card worked flawlessly under W98SE. Now I upgraded the PC to W2K, because it needs to run Painter8 (which won't work on older OS).

And now this card is behaving really weirdly. All works well after installing all software (W2K, SP2, Windows updates, IE6, Zonealarm, AVguard, and some basic apps like Office 97, HP printer sw etc), at 1024x768, 32bit color (24 bit not offered by W2K driver). After rebooting, W2K somewhere at the end of startup switches the entire desktop to grayscale!

If I uninstall the card, reboot, it will be in 640x480, 256 color mode. Switching then to 1024x768x32, all is peachy. Until you reboot. Setting the hardware acceleration to the one but lowest level fixes it, then all is in color. Same behaviour in 16bit mode. Only 256bit mode yields color at full hardware acceleration.

No hardware acceleration slows down work too much, and since it worked flawlessly on W98SE, I gather this is a driver issue. The Nvidia site has no RIVA128 drivers for W2K.

Does anyone know where I could find a driver update for this? Or any other suggestions to fix this issue?

TIA!

PS: tried installing DirectX 9 from Microsoft Windows Update site, hoping there would be some update in there. But if there is, it's not helping...

I have _very bad_ experiences running NT4 drivers on W2K. Has anyone experience with the RIVA128 NT4 drivers under W2K?
