Help need computer tech for gpu please

I got the computer i ordered from xidax. An a10 system with an R9 280x. Really nice system other than dxdiag and gpuz recognizing my gpu as the intergrated R7 on the apu. gpuz does show the 280x though and the on board R7. Anyways i sorted through all of the included materials in the box and i don't see any DVI to AGP cables. my monitor is old and the only cable i have is an (hdmi to hdmi). Will that work? I think the 280x may have an hdmi port. My motherboard does. I'm able to use my monitor by plugging it into the motherboard but it activated that stupid gpu i don't want.

You can use hdmi if needed. Have you tried it yet? Try booting up with your 280 and see. It's possible you may need to fiddle around in your bios settings.

Ok so one end of the hdmi goes into my gpu but what about the other end? Im assuming it goes into the motherboard correct? If im using on board graphics then it was not disabled in the bios. should i disable it before using a dedicated card?

No. From 280x to monitor. Might have to disable onboard video. Try and see what happens.

i dont have an hdmi port on my monitor. only gpu and motherboard. so i would need dvi to agp or avi whatever cable right?

Thank you Schmuckley. Still don't understand why it didn't come with one to begin with. What about the intergrated gpu. Will it disable when the 280x takes over or do i have to go into the bios to disable it?

Not familiar with your AMD BIOS, but if there isn't a monitor connected to it, it would be effectively "disabled" I think. But check the BIOS to see what options are there.

I'm running an HDMI-to-HDMI/AVR-HDTV from one graphics port, and DVI to a VGA [D-Sub/15-pin] connection on my monitor. The latter is the easy trick: most graphics cards come with a DVI-to-VGA plug in the box. But you can also purchase a DVI-to-HDMI [or vice-versa] cable.

I'm assuming your monitor only has VGA/D-sub/15-pin input, then? You could use the DVI-D to VGA plug I mentioned, and connect to the monitor with your standard VGA cable. Whatever it is that I don't fully understand about your rig and monitor -- this should be easy to solve even if you have to spend a few bucks:

AMD gpu connections are not always the best for old monitors. I got a HD7770 to put into my system. I have two monitors with DVI and AGP connectors. To my chagrin, the 7770 only had one DVI port so instead of being able to use one DVI and another DVI with an AGP adapter( of which I had a bunch). I had to purchase a HDMI to VGA adapter.

If you could tell us what monitor you have that would be helpful. Every R9 280X has at least one DVI right? Maybe just a normal DVI cable will be enough. If it's too old to have DVI then Bonzai has you covered.

Essentially yes, as long as you actually have the monitor connected to the card and not the motherboard. It'll still be detected by the system, but it won't actually do anything and will basically be asleep.
