But, in all reality, it's tough to go "wrong" with either a Sony or Canon.
the DSC-W7 is under $300 and has 7.2 MP. I did a lot of research into cameras in this price range a few months ago to buy one for my GF (bought it from newegg eventually). The Sony has the disadvantage of having less user-control for shutter, etc., but everything I read said it simply worked better and took better pictures. For 99 out of 100 times she would want to use it, that is all that matters. It also has an amazing screen. I have used the camera personally in the past and found the pictures to be wonderful in terms of clarity and color.
all the other competitors in the price range had something wrong with them, either bad picture quality, slow or clunky interfaces, obsolete MP range, retarded Wi-Fi crap, etc. i thought nikon or canon would have something that would turn me on, but everything i read about them turned me off. i'm not willing to trade picture quality for anything. who cares if you can control the shutter yourself if the picture is still going to look like sh!t?
the irony is i came into my research pretty sure i didn't want a sony, because I have an old Sony DSC-D770 (their first attempt at an SLR-style camera) and while it was pretty cool at the time, the picture quality is just trashed by ANYTHING that came after it, and I got kinda turned off the Sony thing, realizing that all their lens hype and crap doesn't mean anything without a quality CCD in there. furthermore, I paid $800 for it at the time and it had 1.5 MP! I've just gotten sick of paying for the Sony name. But their new stuff is damn good, so that's what I ended up with again. I'll buy whatever is the best for the money at the time I buy.
edit: newegg still has the W7 for under $300. i tried getting it from costco and best buy for better prices but they always conveniently ran out and canceled my order.
