I just reformatted. I hve a 40 gig system disk and a 120 gig data disk. After I got through installing, I went to import the 120 gig under the disk management tool. The only options there is to convert to basic, which will format it. How do I import the forgein disk now?

Mods, sorry about the post in this forum, but I have a term paper due tommorrow and it's on that drive, so I need a quick answer. Please move or delete after someone helps me out here.

doesn't it just show up in my computer?
what kind of disk is it- external? (the 120gb one).

i reformatted my 30gb laptop, but my 160gb usb2.0 drive just popped into my computer with no questions asked...

It's a internal EIDE ATA 100. I took the 120 to work today and all I had to do was import it, but it doest give me that option now. God, I ope there is a way to do it without formatting.

you're using the same OS and file system as your previous system, before reformatting, as after?

THe original OS it was on was XP Pro. I took it to work after my home pc crapped out. That was XP Pro too. The fresh install I did was of XP home.

THe all are using the NTFS file system

when I right click on it under Disk Managament I have 3 options. Convert to basic, properties and help. I don't even have the inport option, it's not even there. 😕

I think convert to basic will do it. I don't think it will reformat. HOWEVER, if you try it and it does it's not my fault.

Install the drive in a different PC and remove the data. That would probably be your best course of action to save your term paper in the time alotted. If something goes wrong and the data is wiped, you're screwed (would take far more effort to get it back, if it's even possible).. Good luck!

Edit: Do you have the drive properly set up as Master or Slave?

Any other suggestions?

to be honest i think you've already lost all your data; transporting around drives especially in non-static containers can be an issue... it should be plug and play, literally.

if you haven't change the master/slave settings, stick it in another computer as suggested, and if that doesnt' work either, take the risk and do the convert, otherwise sit down and re-write that paper...

Right click the leftmost part of the drive, and the first option should be change or assign drive letter or paths....
