Older mustang? Cheap to buy and cheap to make it fast. There are a gazillion aftermarket bits for them.

Let me know if you like the Beetle idea.

I have a 74 SuperBug I'm thinking of selling.

engine is apart, body in pretty good shape.

There are tons of different cars you could pick. You have any idea at all what direction you'd like to go in?

my goal is to have a car that ive put together completely so i can learn how it works in the process, and upgrade/modify for the most part entirely on my own. Beetle sounds kinda good, I know you can get em dirt cheap and zillions of parts and its a fairly simple car. A long time ago I wanted a between 85 and 91 Mustang 5 liter but i dont think i can afford to get one and add to it

I'd do a Datsun if I could.. I love them
maybe not cheap though :(

maybe a Chevy Nova or something common and relatively cheap :D

You're in luck. I just happen to have a '74 Ford Maverick and a '77 AMC Pacer that I just happen to want ~ $2k for.

Which one would you prefer? They're both destined to be classics.

Mustang is a great project car. Lots of them available cheap and lots of aftermarket parts to fix them up.
