i need to buy a new turbocharger for my 2000 s40. there are some on ebay for relatively cheap. they look completely different, but i don't know if they will work regardless of shape or not.

don't know the difference between these turbochargers:
GT45 TURBOCHARGER 700+ HP T4/T66 3.5" V-BAND 1.05 A/R | eBay
Mitsubishi Turbocharger | eBay
BRAND NEW GENUINE OEM TURBOCHARGER FOR VOLVO S40 & V40 | eBay
Volvo S40 V40 Rebuilt Turbocharger 2000-2004 | eBay

is there really a difference in performance between these? is it noticeable?

fyi, i'm not some street racing dude with a suped-up car... i'm just a normal guy driving in normal city conditions driving a normal volvo s40. i need to buy the part asap so i can get it fixed asap. my car is not driveable without being a potential danger to everyone behind me.

and i don't want to have my rental car forever.

The first one is not the right turbo for your car, you'd need to perform significant modifications to make it work. Don't get that one.

Any of the other three, if the sellers are honest/correct should fit. A rebuilt turbo should be OK if the rebuilder is competent.

Now, I have not looked at the links you provided, but I would definitely want to purchase a turbo from a RELIABLE/TRUSTWORTHY source. A turbo failure can take out your entire motor.

What's the latest word on chinese turbos?

Hit-or-miss, but more hit than miss is my impression. I've played with several recently, they're decent and can take some abuse, but response/performance isn't as good as a name-brand turbo. Finish is a little off, if one cares (I don't).

True story. And a Volvo engine won't be too cheap...

OP: I would get in touch with a Volvo specialty outfit to turbo specialist rather than trust someone just flipping rebuilt or used turbos that may or may not know what the hell is going on. I say that having had pretty good luck with china-chargers so far, but I use those on my toy car (where a used engine is $500), not my DD.

Have you thought about putting a fan in the intake tube instead? I remember seeing a video around here with a suped-up car having one.
