Hello friends!

I was planning to buy a digital camera for myself, but needed help in the matter of megapixel issue. I actually wanted to know how much megapixel should I go for as price structure is not a issue. What actually is the difference between 5 MP and 7 MP camera. Is it just the size of the picture that differs or the quality also changes witha higer MP camera.

Please guide.

Thank you.

It's the just level of detail that the picture is. For every unit of area, the 7MP camera will sample more dots than the 5 MP camera.

But it's all about what you'll be using it for. If all you're going to be doing is printing out 5x7's of a picture, the detail won't be enough to justify going for the 7MP, in my opinion (but then again I'm more budget conscious than you appear to be). The more detailed you need the picture to be, the more gain there is from megapixels.

The only difference really is how big you will want to print up the picture.
For instance, if you want a standard 4X6, a 2MP is fine.
I use a 6MP and it gives great pics (maybe 85% as good as ole fashioned) when printing up on A4

People need to understand that it isn't all megapixels but also the quality of the CMOS scanner. Get a camera with good reviews and a quality CMOS sensor etc.. Because you can have a 12mega pixel camera but with a ****** CMOS sensor and a 6 megapixel with a very GOOD one and the 6mega pixel camera will run circles around the other camera..

goku is bang on...

a 5MP DSLR will whoop a 6MP compact for quality cause the sensor is much bigger = less noise

i suggest you take a look at the site www.dpreview.com as they have plenty of reviews for different digicams, if money's not a problem then a Canon EOS1D and 6 different lenses or similar will be fine for anything you ever want to do;)

Also,
As TLW says,

BUT,
If you did want a digi compact, then I wholly recommend fujifilm550. It also does 640X480@30fps movies upto total of the xd card.

Couple of pointers: Don't get one with a CMOS sensor. CCD is usually better. Also, a good 5 megapixel camera that costs as much as a cheap 7 megapixel will probably take higher quality (but lower resolution) pictures.

For example, a $250 5 megapixel camera is more likely to:
Have better color reproduction.
Have better lenses.
Cycle faster between shots.

Than a $250 7 megapixel camera.

It's been like this for A LONG time. The best of the last generation is usually better than what is offered by the comparitively cheap new generation.
