Hi, Ive been looking at several lcd montiros and ive gotten it down to a few that I am having a hard time choosing between:

Samsung SyncMaster 172x

Samsung 710N

Sharp LL-172G-B

Sony StylePro SDM-S73

ViewSonic VP171B-2

now these all have at least a 16ms response, so they should all be fine for gaming and ive read reviews on all of these. of course, the 172x is the most expensive montior on the list, but if its nto oging to give me much over the others, i dont want to spend the extra money. one of my big concerns is how all of these deal with 1024x768. I want to use that res primarily and all of these are 1280x1024, so im hoping one of these does that well. if none do, then ill just have to get use to 1280 i guess lol. thanks

1024x768 looks like crap on ANY 17" LCD

1) it's not the native resolution

2) that's a 4:3 resolution, 17" LCDs are 5:4 monitors (with a 5:4 resolution of 1280x1024)

710N belongs back on the list

well if they all reproduce 1024x768 badly, then im back to square one. which of these is the best buy? ill be using it for gaming, watching movies, and office apps llike word. they all seem pretty much the same to me, but it sounds like the 172x would be the best choice, its also the most expensive lol

well when i look at pricing i notice that the viewsonic monitor is $30 more then the sony, but the samsung 172x is only $10 more then the viewsonic. decisions, decisions lol.

i just want one that is going to last and can handle multimedia jobs well enough wihtout annoying ghosting or pixalating.

one other thing i ntoiced is that the viewsonic and samsung models both use a 6bit panel and not 8bit. the reviews ive seen for the viewsonic say that results in some bad color reproduction. does anyone know if the Sony monitor uses a 6bit or 8bit panel? my goal was to get a 16ms, 8bit panel, i didnt realize all my choices were 6bit lol.

VP171B is the best amongst those. Not only does it have an 8ms response time, it also has a good contrast ratio. I have seen this monitor and the Syncmaster side by side (at local shop) and the VP171B is an all around better monitor.

well i would be happy with the 172x except that its a 6bit panel right? i heard that 6bit panels have trouble with color reproduction, evne anand's own review said that. are you saying its not bad enough to be a deal breaker?

about the LG 1720p, can you list a link to it on bestbuy? i cant find it on there or anywhere with google in fact. what are its specs?

ok see im getting confused about the viewsonic monitor lol. ive heard its really good, and yet ive heard others say it has bad color reproduction. has anyone here actually used one with games or movies like dvds or xvid? that would help clearing it up.

The 172x has the best color reproduction of any monitor, and apparently it's a 16-bit display...
at least according to thg.

The viewsonic VP171B is pretty good too, just a few problems:

Even without touching any of the controls, the basic settings were pretty satisfactory. The colors were pleasant. When studying the screen more closely, we could see that there was a slight lack of green, thus a very slight tendency for the grays to veer toward mauve, and the contrast was too strong, tending to wash out the pale colors. The basic settings thus need a little attention. The brightness did little to affect the image.

Btw, the 172x in that review is the old 16ms model which wasn't too good when it came to gamming.
Samsung have since fixed that with their new 12ms model on which there is no ghosting whatsoever.

172x - image sharpness compared to a crt/12 ms response time for gaming

if you're buying it for movies and games primarily, why even get an LCD? a high end CRT still does better in those two categorys

Some people don't want the bulkiness of a CRT. I'm willing to sacrifice performance for the sake of desktop space.

the 710n is awesome. I dont understand why you want to run at 1024x768. Just increase the DPI then it will be fine. But the 710n was likie 215 last time i checked on newegg. Its a great monitor, and very bright.

Ah yes... such a seemingly small yet huge issue (no pun)! My Damn 19" CRT is a major PITA, plus it makes any desk bow badly under its mass, but its an awesome monitor.

well now this hasnt helped my selection at all lol.

if the 710n is back in the running, is it now the best of those i had listed? disregarding the analoge input since it seems to not be a big deal.

ok one other thing. just for arguments sake lets throw in the Hyundai L90D+ 19'' lcd. now this montior is in the same price range as the 172x. the only problem is the reviews from people that bought it are so varied, how can some say its fantaistc fro gaming, movies and text, then other say its not that great.

i read the review of it on tom's hardware and i got the impression it wasnt a good monitor at all, and yet ppl say otherwise. does anyone here own one that can vouch one way or another? if its good enough, im definitely doing the 19'' lcd. when i say good enough, i mean as good or better then the 17'' models ive talked about here.
