Ok two weeks ago I was driving on the freeway and a pepple or small rock hit my windshield and made a small dent on the windshield. The size is about half 1/8 of a inch in diamater. I am told that I need to get it fixed or the windshiled will crack. So here are my question.

Will the windshiled crack if I left it alone?

Can I fix this by myself? How?

Anyone know a place in San Gabrill vally area of CA that do this?

Thanks

pretty much any glass shop that does car windows can fix a rock chip.
in fact most insurance companies will wave the deductible if you have coverage and pay for the repair.
they do this because it saves them in the long run. better to pay for a relatively cheap repair now, than to shell out for a whole new windshield later.

Don't let water get into it~

it'll make it expand even further~

bring it to your local windshield place~

it should be like 50 bucks or so~

places around here were asking around that~ i'm in NJ btw

Call your insurance co, and ask if you have coverage for the chip. We sell a addition to full coverage called glass buyback. Most places here in town wave the ded, esp if it's only a chip, or a crack less than 6". Full windshield will cost $100 ded. If you have full coverage your prolly safe.

Glass buyback here costs about $6-$8 about every six months :)

If you don' t have it, ask about adding it on, you'll be glad in the long run, as the newer glasses in vehicles cost upwards of $500 sometimes, depending on the vehicle.

Don't put nail polish on it to prevent further cracking. It'll make it impossible for the glass shop to apply their solution/glue/patch that will prevent the crack from spreading.

Here's how you can fix it...
1) Wait until there is snow or ice on your windshield.
2) Fill up 5 gallon bucket of with hot water.
3) Toss water on windshield.
4) Videotape process and post here for us to see.
5) Buy new windshield.

If there is just a chip mising from the windshield and it hasn't started to crack yet, you can get an "windshield patch kit" (basically just epoxy glue with an applicator) for about $12 or so from most automobile parts stores. Just follow the directions and you might be OK. I patched mine about 8 years ago and haven't had a problem since (even with northern winters). If you don't at least patch it, a crack will almost certainly form and then quickly spread.

If you're lucky they will go for years and years and not crack. My dad had a crack in his windshield on an old truck for like 5 years, it didn't spread. Just don't press it.

When replacing a windshield, what's best, a factory replacement, or something else?

The factory windshields seem to be twice as expensive for whatever reason. I know they come with tint that would match the factory scheme, which is a plus.

I am not sure if those self repair kit are the same as the ones they use at the repair shop. But I bought one of those $10 self repair kit before and it works wonder. I was able to repair a chip on my windshield. The size of the chip is about the size of a nickel, after applying the solution that kit provide and use the kit on it I hardly noticed the chip anymore.

my cousin had a 2002 Camry and after a few day a rock hit the windshield and cracked it ... they said non factory would cost around 300 (installed) but the Toyota one would cost 600 (installed)
