A few weeks ago, I built a new computer with an Asus motherboard (VIA KT600 chipset native support SATA) and I used a Seagate SATA 80G harddisk (ST380013AS).
I low level formatted the harddisk and then started installing WinXP Pro. I needed to insert a VIA SATA controller driver floppy disk created from the motherboard CD-Rom because WinXP CD cannot detect my harddisk. During the GUI part of the installation, a warning message popped up saying "Something has not pass the Windows Logo test and I may have errors in the future". I didn't choose to stop the installation but to continue the process. I could run Windows as usual. When I installed drivers from the motherboard CD-Rom, I chose to install the VIA controller driver again. The same warning "...has not pass Windows Logo test..." popped up and I choose to continue again. I guess the message that appeared during the installation was also caused by the VIA controller driver.
After the installation I can use the Windows as usual for a few days. But after that, one day when I started up my computer, it stucked at the Windows Logo screen with the process bar moving under it. I restarted my computer and try to use safe mode. I cannot access safe mode (stucked again). However, since the logo screen did not appear, I can see what is behind it. It stucked at the line "Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys" for a long time. Then a blue screen appeared with a "c0000218 Unknown hard error".
I tried to use the WinXP CD Recovery Console. I typed "1" to logon to my nly Windows installation in C:\ When it prompted for admin password, I hit "Enter" (because I didn't set password before). Then it shows the following:
C:\WINDOWS>dir (I typed dir)
The volume in drive C has no label.
The volume Serial NUmber is 748a-4667
Directory of C:\WINDOWS
An error occurred during directory enumeration.
That means I cannot format my harddisk. I tried to delete existing partition to reinstall Windows, it said "the partition cannot be deleted and the drive cannot be accessed", then a blue screen appeared with "problem occured and Windows is shut down to prevent damage".
Then I used the Seagate SeaTool DOD diagnostic software to check my harddisk. It results as follow:
SMART Status Check Result: Unknown
90-Second Test Result: Passed
File Structure Test Result: Failed
Partition 1 (No Label) Result: Failed with critical Errors
Complete Surface Scan Result: Passed with Minor Error(s) Sector ???????, I/O Error
(Remark: I forgot the sector number so I denote it as ???????)
That software explains that a File Structure Test failed can be caused by improper shutdown of computer (which I did restart my computer when I was stuck). Then I used the Seagate DiscWizard to "Fill-Zero(Full)" low-level format my computer. Then I checked the harddisk with SeaTool again. It had the same result as above.
I repeated the procedure from the very beginning and started installing WinXP again. I used the VIA SATA Controller driver floppy disk, resulted in the same warning message. I ignored it and I reached the usual WinXP desktop. A few days later, when I started up my computer, it stucked at the Windows Logo screen again. I repeated the above procedure to check my computer and it gave me the exact same result ("File Structure Test failed, Complete Surface Scan passed with minor I/O error").
I then took my harddisk back to the computer store. The technician there tested it similar to what I did and concluded that the harddisk died. I RMA the harddisk.
Remark: I used the same WinXP Pro CD and the same procedure to install WinXP on my old computer that used the old IDE harddisk (that means I didn't need to insert any driver floppy disk). The WinXP runs without any problem till now.
A few weeks later, I got back a harddisk from Seagate.
I first "Fill-Zero (full)" low-level formatted it. Then I tested it with the SeaTool DOS diagnostic software. The result is as follow:
SMART Status Check Result: Unknown
90-Second Test Result: Passed
File Structure Test Result: Failed
Invalid IMR something
(Remark: I forgot exactly what it was, but the technical support from Seagate said that is caused by low-level format.
And it is usual.)
Complete Surface Scan Result: Passed
(Remark: No I/O error)
Then I installed WinXP Pro from the same CD with the same procedure, using the same VIA SATA controller driver, resulting the same warning about "...has not pass Windows Logo test..." and reached the usual Windows desktop. After a few hours, when I rebooted my computer, it stucked at that Windows logo screen again. It stucked at that line "Multi...Mup.sys". My installation procedure is exactly the same as last time and it resulted in the exact same error. Then I ran the SeaTool diagnostic test and it results as follow :
SMART Status Check Result: Unknown
90-Second Test Result: Passed
File Structure Test Result: Failed
Partition 1 (No Label) Result: Failed with critical Errors
Complete Surface Scan Result: Passed with Minor Error(s) Sector 1805640, I/O Error
(Remark: Now there is an I/O error!)
I guess if I low-level format the harddisk again like the last time, the I/O error will still be there like the last time.
Does my harddisk fail the second time? It seems to be that if the harddisk fails because of the I/O error, the error is caused by WinXP (because it had no I/O error prior to installation). If the harddisk does not fail, then it seems that the WinXP has a software error. But in that case I cannot explain the I/O error that I think is related to the physical harddisk. The I/O error presists even after I format the harddisk so it does not seem to be a software problem. If it is a software peoblem, is that error caused by the VIA SATA controller driver and that warning message? Because that is the only difference I can think of between my installation procedures for this new computer and my old computer. If my computer problem is caused by the VIA SATA controller driver software, what can I do? Choose "stop installation" when that warning message appears?
Honestly, I have not much idea about why it happened. I don't believe that I got two bad harddisks in a row.
Please help. Thanks a lot.
