Hello people, i have a problem here:

Things are getting a little too hot for my system and it resets if it gets to around 72 - 76 C. I'm currently running an AMD 1.4 with thermaltake dragon orb 3 with the 7K fan cap removed (cos it was just too loud!!). I've put a thermaltake crome orb fan on in place of the 7K one and it runs at around 5K rpm. I also have a 120MM fan in the front of the case and a modded PSU (only 300w) that has an additional fan underneath (like the enermax ones - just not quite as clean).

My case is a little too small for what i have so i assume this is part of the problem but i also have a copper shim on the processor and i'm wondering if this could be causing a problem? (i did apply some thermal compound to the prossesor when i fitted it and removed the sticky black stuff from the dragon orb).

System Temp hangs around 35 C and processor is at 68 C idle and then 70....72....74.....+ at load - then it resets. I know the AMDs run hot but i after reading a few things i notice people were saying if it goes over 70 C you have a problem?

Any ideas anyone? Also any suggestions on a new 'quiet' heatsink would be nice

cheers

The spec is....

good lord!!! Yes, remove the shim and see if that helps. Also, get a better heatsink! You can pick up a SK-6 with a fan for like $35 or so.... Or even a Vantec or something would be better than that... Alpha PAL6035 could work, or a PAL8045 if you want to go extreme. (not recommended unless you really feel like dismantling your entire system) Dragon Orbs 3s arent too bad with a 7K fan, but with a slower fan, I can only imagine that it could be so much worse. However, I doubt it could be so bad that it would let your CPU heat up so high, so I would presume that the shim must be prohibiting contact between the CPU and the HSF.

Also, how does taking the side off your case help? You are correct that 70 C is too hot for an AMD. Mine runs at 42-44 C, and this is with a 36% overclock.

Taking the case off does help by about -5 C. But running games or even an intensive winamp plugin just turns the heat right on!! I think you right about the dragon orb - i gonna have to look for something more suitable, but i'll give it ago without the shim first.

Thanks

Sounds like the shim is a little too thick, and your heatsink isn't making good contact with the core.. maybe I'm dumb though.

I'm no genius, but that is EXACTLY what I would assume to be the problem. Dragon Orbs are evil. I second the motion to get a new HSF combo.

That seems really hot to me.

I am running a Thermalright SK-6, and have replaced the fan since the 7000rpm delta WAS WAY LOUD, with a 60mm to 80mm converter and a sunon fan. My athlon xp runs at about 46 under a full load.

68 celcius is definitely something more than the Dragon Orb. I used to have a DO3 and 7000 RPM fan with my Tbird 1.4, my idle/load was 41/48, so its more than just "Dragon Orbs sux0r!". Double check and make sure you mounted the thing correctly. And, yes, I used a shim as well so I was using the same three pieces you are.

Everyone else has said it, but I'll say it too...that's REALLY HOT! Those kind of temps are nearing burn-up for an AMD CPU. Definitely try taking off the heatsink and remounting it. If that doesn't work, try again without the shim.

What kind of temps did you have before you put the quieter fan on it? That might also be your problem.

I never said it was just the dragon orb. It's most likely the shim, as a previous poster suggested and I seconded. It's just that not many people have the patience to put up with a low-pitched whine...
