I bought a new PC about a month and a half ago (an HP pavilion a1640n) and last weekend I tried to add an old hard drive to it. I tried using one of those IDE to SATA converters bc my old drive was IDE and the motherboard only accepts SATA. The device didnt work, as the PC didnt recognize it, so I took it out. Now for some reason, when the PC boots up, it gets all the way to the Windows XP Welcome screen and then restarts. It keeps doing this at the same exact spot. Right after it does, it gives me a blue screen and this is the message
"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHDISK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer.

Here are some of the steps I've taken which have all been unsuccessful.
1. I've made sure all the cables are connected and even used different cables to see if that might do the trick
2. I bought a new SATA hard drive and tried that but I get the same message so I doubt the problem is with the actual drive and might be with my PC hardware
3. I've put in the Windows XP CD and tried hitting R for repair but I dont even get that option. It just loads files and then goes right back to starting Windows and I get the same message again, only this time it doesnt restart.
4. I ordered the HP recovery CDs and when I try to boot from it, I get the message Boot Device Failure
5. Ive tried to use the HP recovery on the PC by hitting F10 at startup but no matter how much I try to hit it, it just wont go into the recovery screen. Im not opposed to erasing everything bc the PC was fairly new and I dont have too much important stuff on it.
6. How do I get to a point where I can run chkdsk? I accidently got to a Dos screen before (dont know how) and on my C: drive, the only folder I saw said Recovery and it showed no files in it. I tried typing in CHKDSK and /p , /r, /f and nothing happened as well
7. I went back to Circuit City, where I bought it and explaiend the problem to the PC tech there and he said that it sounded like a master/slave issue after I tried to put in a new drive and said that I needed to set the drive to master. I then tried to do that but the hard drive doesnt have any pins to put jumpers in to designate that.
Can someone please help me bc Im running out of options. This is a fairly brand new PC and I dont know what to do with it now
