HELP! My P4 cpu is stuck to the retail heatsink and I can't get it off!

My new heatsink came in the mail today. When I took of the retail heatsink (w/ thermal pad) I noticed the cpu was stuck to it. In fact, I had removed the cpu without unlatching the cpu clip! To top it off, I still can't remove the cpu from the heatsink, it's like the cpu is glued on. Anyone else ever experience this? I don't know what to do. I'm afraid that if I take a heat gun to it that I'll ruin the cpu. Any ideas?

This seems to be reaching epidemic proportions. This is the 3rd or 4th post on this in the last 3-4 days.

A heat gun probably wouldn't ruin it considering the temperatures that those things run at. You can also try putting it in the freezer and then carefully twisting it off.

this pisses me off! Didn't Intel ever think that someone, somewhere at some time would like to remove the heatsink without ripping the cpu out of the socket!

Wait, you pulled it out, without lifting the lever, and it came out?

Something's not right there.

Anyways, it's most likely a vacuum seal and not an epoxy. Run the sucker with no fan (the P4 will clock-throttle itself, no need to worry) until it's nice and toasty, then it'll slide right off. Mind your fingertips though - they'll get crisped if you're not careful where you grab.

So the HSF is attached to the CPU? Probably a wise move so that people won't remove it and screw up the CPU.

Yeah, I gently lifted the heatsink after releasing the two heatsink levers. I didn't pull hard at all, but the cpu came out and the cpu lever (the one that is attached to the plastic socket) was still in the latched posistion. What does that cpu lever do anyway?

For some reason....this threads title reminded me of that old lady in those commercials. "I've Fallen, and I can't get up!!"

I noticed that too when I was typing. Anyway, that's how helpless I felt. I finally got the cpu off. I used a blowdryer to heatup the heatsink and I pryed as hard as I could with my fingers. When the cpu finally let loose, I wasn't expecting it. I had to juggle it like three times and I almost dropped it!

Try putting it back together and doing it the right way. The HSF should come off without pulling the CPU.
