Help...my mouse is "floating"!

Any cure for fixing a mouse? My cursor isn't doing what I want it to (it's "floating") , and is happening on a more regular basis. About the only thing I have been able to do is pick it up and almost slam it back down to get it to work again! I know..."mouse's are cheap, buy a new one" will be the response, but...

Look for dust (in my case it was cat fur) obstructing the optical pickup. On the MS mice, the pickup is recessed, and dust or other fibers can get lodged in there. The slightest obstruction will screw up the mouse response.

all my mouse are expensive, heh.
from $40-$100

what brand you using, maybe get something more reliable then a generic optical mouse?

My mouse started doing that as well. But it stopped when I picked it up or moved it. The ol' MX500 I've had and wore out for 3 years was dying 🙁. So then it started randomly stopping right in the middle of CounterStrike and sometimes gave a "USB Device Not Recognized" error. So yesterday I said screw it and bought a MX518 😀

I fixed it...I think. It was mainly giving me problems on the day of my original post, and not since then. I took it apart and cleaned out the dust and cat hair, as well as cleaning the pad. I really like the MX518, and just ordered it today...yay me! This one's a Fellowes somethin or other...
