Help - my laptop recognizes memory less than installed.

My laptop has memory 512 MB installed but System Information shows only 384.
When I tried the memory w/ another laptop, it showed 512 MB.

What cause the system recognize sthe memory less than installed? Windows or motherboard? How to find out and fix?
