I was just on vacation in Washington State, and my girlfriend found this mushroom. I'm curious as to what kind it is?

good rule of thumb is that anything brightly colored should be avoided, particularly frogs and snakes heh.

That is it for sure. That is in one of my wilderness books in the "poisonous" sections. Good rule of thumb for eating mushrooms you find outdoors, dont. Even some very experienced people have died doing so, the "death cap" is the worst. (unless you are on the TOP of the liver transplant list, then you may have a chance.)

Pertaining to the Christianity mushroom link above, I have read a few articles about Santa Claus and this mushroom. The Red and white trim the jolly ho ho hoing and little elves making toys, connection maybe?
