Help! My home network is replying twice.

My Configuration:

Laptop and networked laser printer on SMC 6 port hub
SMC hub wired in to the crossover port on Netgear 8 port hub (in another room)
Desktop pc connected to NetGear hub
DSL modem connected to NetGear Hub via X-over cable

When I ping from laptop to desktop it says host unreachable.
I can ping via name (and it translates the ip)

I put my friends sniffer on the network and it said that the pc is replying twice. doesn't matter which way I ping.

Both machines can access internet and other computers in other networks fine.

Tried swapping out NetGear hub with BayStack Router. Same thing happens.

Can you help?

DUDE!

that is fsked up. Are you SURE you are gettin two replies for every echo-request? windows sends out four ICMP-echo request (ping) so you will see four ICMP-echo reply frames.

Are you saying that the sniffer picked up 4 pings and 8 ping replies? If that is the case then brute force attack the problem by uninstalling every big of network card and configuration on each maching and reinstall. Other wise you have a loop in your network (bad mojo) somewhere but i didn't see one by your description.
