Ok, I have a friend who has a choice of these processors, like for free ! But he doesn't know which would be better, I am leaning towards the Celeron 333 (128k Cache) but I don't know for sure either. Here is some background info:

Intel 440LX Motherboard
96MB SDRAM
Runs Win98SE, plays games, internet etc.

no question, the celeron333 is superior, it's a little bit of Pentium history: the PII started with 512kb L2 cache offdie at 1/2 speed. they made Celerons eventually with 128kb fullspeed ondie cache. it worked just as fast as the other style clock for clock.

go for the Celeron 333. to bad it's the a BX board, otherwise you can try to see if the 333 will run at 100Mhz FSB. LX only goes to 83Mhz I think.

Celeron's are not faster than P2's. They are actually slower clock for clock. If there were some way that you could run the P2 at a 100mhz fsb then it would be good. The P2 266 should be unlocked anyway and from what I remember nearly ALL of the P2 can easily hit 400+ mhz. The celeron 333 isn't the most overclocker friendly chip.

although the P2 is unlocked, The L2 cache is EXTERNAL.. which is the REAL problem for OC the P2. on the other hand, the Celeron has integrated L2 cache on die, which gives you more chances to OC it.

Only in synthetic CPU benchmarks which are cache happy. In everyday tasks such as 3D games, clock for clock Celerons match P2s and Katmai P3s (when running non-SSE code). Plus the Celeron will overclock better because of it's full speed, on-die cache.

Get the Celeron.

Sorry, but the 333 is a great overclocking chip. All of the Celly's with the 66 fsb overclock pretty good. my 366 hits 550 great.

"The P2 266 should be unlocked anyway and from what I remember nearly ALL of the P2 can easily hit 400+ mhz."

Since his friend only has an LX mobo he can't use the 100fsb speed anyway. The highest is most likely 83mhz.
I'd say definately go with the Celery 333. I still have my old Celeron 333, currently being used by my sister.:)

Clock for clock they run on par w/P2's, except for maybe the P2's which ran at 100fsb(P2 350's and higher), because of the extra memory bandwidth.

:) by the way that wasnt meant as an insult.

my initial reaction was "freak why not just get a new mainboard and a 800+ athlon/duron"

but some people just want to be able to write a document and surf the internet
