So my friend won't let me go to sleep until I post this thread. He's looking for the name of a game from the 90s.

It was:

-Top down
-Aircraft Shooter
-Multiple aircraft you can choose from
-You can buy aircraft
-Huge map with enemy bases with turrets you could bomb or shoot
-You could caputre or use the enemy fighters
-The opening scene was a movie with your character racing towards a city having flashbacks of his family there. As he gets to the city, a nuclear weapon destroys the city.
-It may have come on a multi-game pack CD which was all the rage back in the day.
-It's 2D

Thanks.

It sounds a lot like one of the Raiden series of games, possibly Raiden X although I'm not sure. The only thing that may not quite fit the description is the opening movie.

sounds a lot like Raptor: Call of the Shadows, but I know it isn't...

Fire Fight?

I remember it came in a two pack - you gave one of CDs to a friend and they would be able to play multiplayer with you. I still have one of the discs downstairs. I think my buddy still has the other one after all these years... maybe I need to go track him down :p

I remember it having huge maps and having some pretty epic battles in that game back in the day.

This sounds like Zone 66, I remember playing the hell out of it on my oh so powerful 486. Top down, free roaming shooter, and I do recall being able to use the enemy planes at some point. You could also switch out your bombs/missiles (had both) for different ones at your base. If I recall correctly they also cost money to reload. There was a shareware version as well, I remember grabbing it off some shareware disks myself at first.

Found some screenshots you can show your friend to help in the hunt.

And a quick wiki check confirms the intro with the city being destroyed by a nuke.

Anyway, hope that helps, I'm now off to see if I can relive the nostalgia and find a copy :D

Not Raptor or Tyrian. Maybe Zone 66; I can't remember if you could buy multiple aircraft in that.

This was it! He sends his thanks. I know how he feels. When I found my copies of MOO2 and Day of the Tentacle, I swore I would keep them in a fire-proof safe.

Fireproof safe won't help in a fire where your entire house burns to the ground. It may help for a lesser fire. It's so hot, it will get melted anyway. Try a safe deposit box at the bank x_x

I still have my registered copy of Raptor on my hard drive (salvaged from an old 212MB drive). Played it a month or two ago.
