Help! My Favorites are gone in XP!

I once found a tip that said you could move your favorites folder (Documents and Settings\You\Favorites) to another place and Windows was smart enough to follow it. It worked fine, and my Favorites were available linked off another drive. This morning when I started my computer, my favorites were all gone. I went into my Documents and Settings folder and copied the favorites back in, but they are still not showing up. I looked through the registry and found a link to C:\Windows\Favorites. I copied them there, and sure enough they were back. But why are the favorites in Documents and Settings not working? How do I restore things to the way they were? It won't let me move the Windows\Favorites folder, because it is an "operating system folder". Can anyone help?
