I'm having a serious problem here with my system. I have a USR 56K Hardware based PCI modem (2977) and until Sat. I used to connect to my ISP (Prodigy internet) at either 47333kbs or 50333kbs. Friday night prodigys server was down and I could not get connected until Sat morning, but come Sat, I was only connecting @ 22kbs-32kbs ! At first I thought it was Prodigy so I tried hooking up to Earthlink along with a local ISP and still the same thing. So I thought it was my modem so I went out and bought a cheap Winmodem and I still cannot connect like I use to, I did get as high as 37.2kbs with the Winmodem. I tried to force the modem to connect @ 45333 and no go there either. I did notice something strange though. In Win 2K when you click on the two computers in the tray, it always said 0 errors. Now I've been on-line for 14 minutes and have over 800 errors. WTF ? The onlt thing I can think of is that we have had some really bad stormes over the weekend and maybe the phone line got damaged somehow or maybe moisture got in the lines. Does anyone have any ideas on what I should do ?

Moisture in the lines was pretty common at my last job before they got the cable modem. After a storm the connection would stink until the lines dried out some. Pick up your line and dial a digit. If you hear anything but silence odds are it's your line.

Freejack is right. Line noise is the #1 problem with dialup speed -- moisture is a very common problem for sudden drops in speed.
