HELP! MY COMPUTER IS *NOT* OVERHEATING!

In all seriousness, my Pentium 4 3.0c overheated after about 6 months because of dust.

I have a compaq with an Athlon64, COVERED in dust. WHY IS IT NOY OVERHEATING? The power supply is CLOGGED with dust, the fans aren't even blowing air out beucase they're so clogged! The heatsink, at this point, *IS* dust! Dust is CAKED on to the northbridge cooler. The graphics card (A compaq with a graphics card? Yep) is so gray with dust it's not even funny.

WHY is this PC, after being left with dust for about 3 years, NOT overheat ... and NOT throttle?

An outrage! 😛

you should have added solution and chrystals
Ahh, if it is with box crystals inside wow, that would explain everything 😀😀😀

If the A64 has Cool 'n Quiet enabled, then it is probably iding along at 800MHz@1.3V, for ~15W-25W heat output. The bigger question is, did you fix the dust problem 🙂

Not too sure WHAT it is... the heatsink just says "Athlon" on it (I'm really not lying though). I beleive it's an Athlon XP though. Debian Linux is install'd on it, so I'm not too sure how to check 😱.

P4s are rated at intel, run around 69C
my a64 3000+ @2GHz winnie runs around 22-30C, and would beat about the lower half of the P4s

And no, I didn't fix the dust problem. ........... on top of that, does anyone know any good Stress-Testing software for linux? Time to install windows soon anyways. That PC's just been on for a while as a file server (i thought it might come in handy, it never did really), I haven't really noticed it and I recently saw a pile of dust outside my case (the fan must have finally moved and pushed it off or something)... so im like WTF is this? And I went and checked and it turned out that there was ..... god..... so much dust it's not even funny.

Why not? 😕 Ok, lemme help here... inhale, blow REAL hard, retreat from dust cloud before inhaling again. Do it outside if necessary.

That's precisely the reason, I was too lazy to go outside, or waste an entire paper towel roll (there is a CRAPLOAD of dust, really)

But I checked the temps in the bios..... either the temperature sensor is wrong, or.... I dunno.... the temperature is at 125F (51.6C).

Alright. Sighs. I really wanted to prime it (or do some torture rest) or something just to see how solid this peice of equipment is. But right now I'm wiping the dust out. I'll be back in about 10 minutes (yep, there's THAT much dust).

Quick update (I had to say this) - I was giving my PSU some cleaning, you know how there's holes on the bottom of the PSU as an intake thing? Well I cleaned those holes out, and more dust started FALLING DOWN.... My GOD the power supply must have been a dust-box

In box?

=O! IN BOX, INSIDE FROZEN SOLID! SOLUTION IS GLOWING!

its all explained here :Text

I knew about that thread 😛 that's why I was playing along

i know, i was talking about the part where mechbgon asked if it was in the box.😀

Most of the dust is gone now. My temps weren't affected that much though, really. My temps are at 97F (36.1C).
Alright, in all seriousness now guys - I'm wondering why my computer didn't overheat. I mean, is it becuase of the design of the heatsink or something? The heatsink is rather large, and it must be a stock AMD heatsink made for Compaqs (it's a big black fanless heatsink that says "AMD Athlon" on it.... --> note the keyword FANLESS)

i don't think that dust can really effect temps that mcuh, unless it hinders airflow

A thick layer of dust acts like a blanket that traps heat.

A thin layer of dust is nothing, but I have opened cases where there was like 1/2 inch of dust covering everything.
