It might have a software lock on it. Try shutting the computer down (all the way), leave it off for a few sec's, then turn it back on. Try opening it during POST. If it works, then try it in W2k. If it doesn't work there, there's something wrong with some software you have installed.

There should be a very small hole in the front of the cd-rom. Unbend a paper clip and stick it into the hole, which should open 'er up.

Ok are you trying to Right Click "Eject" from the menu or push the button on the front?
Do you see it even attempt to open (ie: it moves the slightest bit but then nothing)?
Are you sure the drive is being detected properly?
Did you install any software (or do a BIOS/Firmware upgrade) between the last time you Ejected/Opened the drive and when you noticed the problem?

Power down your system, disconnect bothe IDE and Pwr cables then reconnect them, start you system back up.

If it won't open during post, either the power to it died, or the unit itself died. Try switching power connector with another device ( or better yet, use an unused one if available) to see it that works. If it doesn't, sounds like a dead unit.

I've never had a drive fail on me but they are right if it doesn't open during post then it is either without power or dead... that or the motor died... probably not though
