help my brand new p4 is running really hot!

Right out of the box its running 44C idle, I thought these things were supposed to be cool? I am using the stock hs/f... the only thing I can think of is that I used radioshack's heat sink compound... either that stuff really sucks or I have a problem. Any ideas?

What are the temps like where you live? Is it overclocked?

FYI: My 1.8A @ 2.4 idles around 32C with an Alpha.

44c isn't that hot, but it's about 5-6c higher then normal idle. What speed P4 is it? The 2.4 and 2.5's might run a bit hotter.

My 2.0A runs at 44-45c under heavy load with the stock Intel cooler.

Might wanna tell us what the speed is and what type of Pentium4 is.

To give you an idea, I have a Northwood 1.6a, at load its about 38C
Overclock it to 2.4Ghz, at load its around 48C

My P4 with stock HSF at 2.24Ghz will not run cooler than 42C or 43C, even if the case is as cold as 35C. I haven't had any problems with it, though. With full load, it hits 55C and doesn't go much higher than that. I haven't had any crashes or anything.

Most of the temperatures I've seen including mine are about 36 C idle/46 C full load. I currently have a P4 533 2.2 with the stock hsf with 1 intake upfront and 2 rear exhaust fans on a full tower case. I don't use anything but Artic Silver on my machines.

When I first installed my p4 I thought I had locked both sides of the heat sink in place. But I hadn't and after my heart attack (jk) I reseated it and temps went down. Not sure if thats it but you might want to check.

Honestly, it doesn't sound as if they heatsink is seated properly. Granted, I'm using an Alpha 8942T but my load temps never exceed 48-49c and I'm talking Prime load there. I've noticed Prime load is usually 1-2 degrees celcius hotter than a normal SETI load. My system specs are in the .sig.

Btw, did you say say yet which mobo you are using?

MOre improtantly the question may be...what mobo??? They are all not reporting equally....

Asus = lowest temps....

Epox = about 3-4c more

Abit and MSI = 5-6c more...

Not sure where gigabyte fits, but nonetheless asus by far reports the lowest temps all across the p4 range...

This stuff above was figure from a limited study awhile back on temps on baords....

That 2.0ghz on an asu may idle at 38c which would be quite nice...remember this temp is actual core temp and not comparable to athlon socket a temps. Notice how newer boards that read internal diode on athlns are starting to get up even higher?

I suggest you buy a innovatech water cooler, my system is a 2.26 runnng at 2.55 and under full load it rarely gets over 40 c.. right now as i type this out its at 38 c.

I dont even need to raise my core voltage to run 100% stable. Asus p4t533c board seems to be over volting to 1.52

Needles to say I am 100% satisfied with the water cooler, even if it costs 260$ delivered
and takes a while to install

I have a 4G4A+ with a 1.6A overclocked to 2.56Ghz and my idle temp is 38C in a room thats 34C (90F). I just got home and turned on the AC. I'm using a Thermalright AX-478 heatsink with a Vantec Tornado Fan. Running 44C idle in a room thats 24C sounds hot to me even with the stock HSF.

The first thing I would do is replace that Radio Shack HS compound (I hesitate to even call it that). Try using Artic Silver 3 or Antec Silver Coumpound (the stuff sold at Best Buy).

I am running a P4 1.6A Antec silvered with an EPoX 4G4A+ and initially, the temps I saw had me worried. 42C idle and 56C load not overclocked and this seemed a bit wierd. So I ran Prime95 for a few days and the temps dropped to about 40C idle and 49C loaded (readings taken from MBM with prime95 on). STill not the best but ehh..

isnt it normaly to run a p4 at 40-42C ? full load at 56C is not really hot actually. Dont tell me u guys expecting p4 will run at 30C at ideal with 30C room temperature.

I'm running a p41.8 OCed to 2.23Ghz with PC2100 RAM and an alpha pal cooler with a panaflo 1la. Idle temp is around 37 degrees and under full load/Prime 95, max temp is 46, max temp was 54 when I had a papst fan on the heatsink. I'm also using as3.

If you're not OCing, your temps seem a tad high but nothing to really worry about.

Its not just about CPU cooling. Case Cooling is also key to overall system temps. I was running a 1.8 at 2.54 ( Standard HSF ) and getting similar temps 44oC at idle. By installing an I-Storm HD cooler, a "BlowHole" exhaust fan and an inlet fan my temps have dropped to 34oC idle. If youve not got any case cooling id give that a whirl befor worrying too much.
