HELP! my bastard roommate hacked my comp again!!

BTW, if it turns out that it is in fact your roommate, then:

1. Screenshot of the desktop.
2. Move all of the icons on the desktop to some other folder (go to /windows/desktop, select all, cut, and paste into some other folder)
3. Shrink to offscreen the taskbar, etc.
4. Set the background to the screenshot.

When he's frantically trying to click on the icons, he will in fact be clicking on an image of the icons. No icons will be present. You can get more elaborate, if you wish, by remapping some of the keys on the keyboard (such as the windows key, etc.) to make the problem a little harder to solve/fix.

hahaha...why go through all the trouble destroying a prefectly good machine...just ebay it and keep the money 🙂

I remember a couple buddies of mine in collage who got into the "who can hork the others PC worse" thing.

Except one of them warned the guy that he wasn't having it... but the second didn't listen and ended up getting a low level format on his HD.

It was very uncomfortable to be in that apartment for a few weeks afterward... but I assure you there were no more PC shenanigans after that.

Step 1) Stop using IE.
Step 2) Get a real browser. (Firefox/Mozilla springs to mind)
Step 2a) Go to windowsupdate.com and update anything it offers for IE

As people have said, more than likely this is a type of virus -- probably a CWS (CoolWebSearch) hijacker variant -- which is doing this to your compy. You can go to merijn.org or spywareinfo.com (if you aren't in Northern Nevada apparantly) and find out more about it.

But yes, stop using IE, or update it on a weekly basis. The way these hijackers get in is by using a well-known flaw in IE which most people don't fix. A fully-updated IE -- or a better browser -- will not fall victim to these flaws.

P.S. If you still think it's your roomie and you want to prove it (provided you don't share the computer with him anyway) just buy a blacklight marker and write on a couple of the keys and/or the mouse with it before you leave. Then if you stuff starts messing up just grab a blacklight and shine it on his hands. If he's been diddling with your compy his hands will glow. And if he hasn't at least your compy and mouse will. 😛

In all likelihood, the problem is adware or a virus. There's a virus that changes the hosts file, it was pretty widespread a couple months ago. And, it was the only virus any of my computers have ever been infected by. PITA.

LoL, except all of those browsers BLOW!!

All one of the browsers I mentioned? Or do you mean anything but IE? 😛

Seriously microsoft, is it that hard to code in popup blocking and tabbed browsing? Oh, and to not leave 18-billion security flaws in your code? 😉
