I let a 'buddy' use my laptop and mt. dew was spilled on it. Everything works fine, but the keyboard. It sticks horribly, is there anything I can do besides send it back to Dell.

DO THE DEW!!

take the keyboard off, and clean it, it most likely spilled under the keyboard too. Better hope it don't seep on the mobo. Use some rubbing alcohol.

Also, if you can't clean it properly (though you should be able to if you take it all apart; most newer laptops seal off the upper side so liquids spilled/dripped on them won't fry the MB), you can probably get a replacement keyboard off Ebay (or from Dell).

If your laptop is still under warranty, Dell will send you a new one for free. I broke a key on mine, talked to tech support, and had it (a whole new keyboard) the next day.

How come it is not your buddy's problem to get it fixed?

I just had a lady come into where I work (PC Repair shop.) She spilled soda on it also. Her laptop no longer boots 1/2 the time and just power cycles without a POST. And her keyboard no longer works other than the O key. Had to take apart the whole laptop and clean it, still doesnt work. :p

We got the keyboard out and have it soaking in distilled H2O. After we get it all dried out we'll see if it works, if not we'll just send it to dell.

This is where " Dell Complete Care " is really worth the extra $$$ on a notebook. I know a guy that ran over his notebook with his car and they replaced it, because he bought the complete care warranty for $120.00.

Spilling Mt. Dew on a KB is not covered under warranty unless you have complete care.

You can call Dell spare parts and order a new KB for ~$30

Sounds like a plan! Then you can present your "buddy" with the invoice and ask for the $30. :)

would you still ask for the keyboard cost even if he is a good friend? Are you going to ask nicely or just with in a serious tone?

lol

Even an accident, any responsible person would expect to pay for damage they caused.

Be sure to let it dry for a few days. Just let it dry in open air. There's a very good chance it will work just fine. You just don't want to try to see if it works before all the moisture has evaporated. Better to give it an extra day or two of drying time.

If the keyboard doesn't work after drying out for a couple of days, I saw one on ebay for about 18 bucks, and yes the invoice will be covered by my buddy.
