Help! Motherboard won't POST.

Just bought a Jetway 830CH (SIS730S chipset) board and can't get the bloody thing to POST. I get an error on the screen saying "CPUFAN DOES NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY" and then the board powers itself down. In the manual it discusses a feature protecting the board from CPU fan failure by shutting down, so I assume that this is the problem. However, the processor fan is correctly connected to the right header on the board and functions fine. I can't get past this screen to disable the feature, not that I've found an option for it anyway, according to the manual. Any ideas?

Does the CPU fan that you're using have a third wire which signals the RPM? Do you know any specifics on the heatsink/fan unit you're using?

It's a Coolermaster DP5 - and it has a third wire yeah. I also tried plugging in a normal case fan just to see if it was detected instead. No joy.

Aaack! Hmm, I downloaded the manual and they don't say there's a way to override that either :( On Soyo motherboards you can override it by holding the Insert key down while turning the system on, until it POSTs, so I suppose that could be worth trying. But you'd think Jetway would mention this in the manual if it could be done.

Hmm... insert doesn't do anything unfortunately. I've read the manual again and it does feature an option under PC Health that disables the CPUFAN detect during POST. Of course... I can't get that far. Genuine Catch-22.

Dang! :( Well, maybe try holding down other keys (Esc? Del?) while powering on, you never know. :(

Thanks for your help, but no luck I'm afraid. There MUST be a way to bypass the check. Anyone else got any ideas?

I'd start by clearing the CMOS, then if the problem persist I'd try a different HS/F if possible and if the problem still persists, Call the place you bought it from and have 'em issue an RMA for it. Good luck :)

Any chance it might detect on the second fan header?
Is it a low rpm fan? RPM's might be below its shutdown setting.
Could be the third wire loose or bad on the hsf, as others suggest try another hsf.

If clearing the CMOS doesn't work b/c the cpu-fan rpm monitor feature defaults to enabled, try to see if you can use a case fan w/ RPM monitoring and connect that to the CPU Fan header. You should be able to boot to the BIOS and disable it (make sure to have the heatsink fan connected to something else)

If not, when you connect the Heatsink's fan connector to another header, does it register the RPMs? It maybe either a faulty fan, faulty header, or both.

Quite frankly I couldn't be bothered to diagnose a fan problem. In the end I temporarily attached a delta fan to the CPUFAN header and it booted fine, allowing me to disable the check and then allow the low RPM fan I got for the machine. Thanks for your help guys.
