I am not sure whether it is my motherboard or my PSU. I am trying to power a shuttle ak31 mobo with an athlon 1800xp processor with a Silencer 275watt PSU. I know atleast one person who has this working for them I thought it would work the same for me. But when I tried running the system with nothing but a video card plugged in I had the following symptoms:

1. Boots every so often
2. Sometimes it detects my processor as an "unknown 1700+ processor"
3. On occasion it will recognize my processor as an athlon xp 1800 +
4. Sometimes when I move the ram around it will post, but after a few tries it won't post anymore

Is it the PSU or a bad motherboard? any ideas?

Have you checked for a BIOS update for your board? I would update the BIOS first ..make sure the board is XP compatible...and then Upgrade the PS. Also...Try with just one stick of CRUCIAL ram.

yeah, i did the usual routine. upgraded bios, used only one stick of ram. tried that one stick in all different slots. same problem. i even tried using an antec 300 watt PSU. same problem.

It has to be the mobo. I've ran across this kind of thread more than three times and the symptoms are exactly the same. have you tried reading FAQ's on shuttle's HP? Or even tried a regular athlon of at least 1.4Ghz speed and see if the problem is still the same?
