i just replaced my IDE cables with round IDE cables.... plop... put back the side door and flipped the switch. instead of my comp running at the same temperatures.... my BIOS says the motherboard is running at initially 33 C... but going up to 48 C in less than 3 minutes. I turned it off because i feared how much worse it could've gotten. My computer doesn't even start up.

strange thing was that it wasn't this way before when i had the normal IDE cables. I put in thermaltake round cables, but that shouldn't make a difference right? before my computer idled at 38 C and started at 33 C off initial start.

I did mess around with adding an extra 120mm fan but took it out when i went to swap out the flat IDE cables.

my system:
ASUS A8N-E mobo
3200+ AMD Venice Overclocked to 2.4 Ghz (Overclocked before I switched cables)
BFG Geforce 6600 GT

any ideas???

EDIT: lowering the clocking speeds isn't helping... i have a zalman ZM-NB47J on the northbridge chip and when i touch it... it's smoking hot! HELP!

Did you put the 120mm fan back in? What all did you change from the original setup? And you definitely need to get some new fetishes. :)

haha.... i just heard this morning that britney's hubby was thinking about televising her giving birth in a 2 episode event. what has TV come to....

anyway, after messing with extra 120 mm fan in my case i took everything out so that it would be the exact same setup except for the round IDE cables replacing the flat IDE cables. (i have a 120 on the back of the case) I wanted to see how much cooler my PC could run with better airflow before I put in a 120 mm fan at the front of my case.

right now i only have a DVD burner (NEC 3540A), a floppy, and maxtor 250 gig 16 mb cache as optical drives. could i have connected the floppy cable backwards? that shouldn't cause a heating problem though..... just throwing out an idea

the WEIRDEST thing.... i completely took out my floppy cable... and the temperatures are fine. they're back to 36 C idle. i put it back in.... and the temperatures start to rise again. i haven't tried putting it on the other way..... but does anyone have an idea of why this is happening???

EDIT: i guess it was the flipped floppy cable..... i switched the floppy cable ends and now windows starts and temperatures are back to normal. i didn't think a backwards floppy cable would mess things up that much. (it's only 1 device)

It might not so much mess with the temps as the monitoring software...
Tas.

what's weird was that when i touched the northbridge zalman heatsink it was hotter than usual too. i dunno.... maybe having it in backwards was making it read all the time?

If your heatsink was really hot, then I would say that the cable was cutting off air, not allowing the heatsink to dissipate heat... Just a guess.

cable was in the exact same place as it is now as it was before... i think in the end the verdict says that connecting a floppy backwards is bad news. thanks for all your help!!!
