HELP! Motherboard Fried or PS Dead ?

I did something very stupid, so I need some expert help:

For some odd reason, my computer alway gets stuck before loading the OS (I mean, nothing will make it move on), so while it was one, I pluged the 4-pin power plug into a CD-ROM drive (it was powered before). And just as soon as I did that, my computer shutted off.

Now, when ever I press the power-on button, nothing will happen.

Did I fry the motherboard (I didn't see sparks, etc)? or is the power supply gone? How can I tell the difference?

Any help is appreciated.

do this: unplug the connector from your motherboard. connect the power supply with your power at home. use a paper clip or so, "unroll" it, and use the two ends to connect the WHITE and GREEN pin on the power supply connector (the one you connect to the motherboard). if the power supply is still working, the fan should spin. if it doesn't, the PS is broken. if it does, that means something else (mobo, cpu, cdrom...) is broken

maybe if you have a spare power supply you can hook it up, or know a friend that will bring his computer over and let you try his power supply. and u can try sticking your cd-rom into your friends computer

rominl: So I basically connect the White and the Green pin on the power supply and let the electricity run thru them? Will I get shocked?

rominl: Thanks, I guess by connecting the two, it resetted the jumbers/breakers in the PS. And it worked.

sorry for the late reply. no, you won't get shock (err... i suppose you are still alive? ) and yeah, it basically tell tricks the PS in telling it to turn on and see at least if it works.

Well, what ever it is, it the PS and the fans went on. But then when I plug it power pack into the Mb, the motherboard worked also. I still dont know what went wrong. Maybe there's a breaker in the PS?

I have seen ATX stuff do some funky things. Included is: when a short occures a timeout will occur before the power supply/mobo powers back on. Of course different motherboards/power supplies have different/no timeouts. So when you accidently short something, do not have a heart attack, wait 5 min and try to turn the machine on again.

oh hmmm, actually this is called the "time fuse", which will disconnect the circuit for....

nah, it was bull... but i have seen the same thing before. i believe it might be some kind of protective circuitry. but i am glad that it is working now again make sure you power off next time
