Help! More Dial-Up Probs!

Hi All,

There is a man that I'm trying to help with getting his computer connected to the internet. I've checked all of the identification, DNS numbers, Wins disabled, proper connection stuff, protocols, protocol settings, etc.

He is able to connect and check his mail, but he cannot browse the internet. He gets "Server not found or DNS Error"

I made him go thru every last setting that could possibly affect networking and/or the connection, and then when he connected, it worked. He hadn't changed anything, though. All he did was look at the settings. Then, after he disconnected, he tryed to reconnect, and he connected, but couldn't use the internet again. Same error...He previously used a different ISP without difficulty, but he switched over to CoreComm, and now his system is FUBAR. I tried adding my dial up connection to his computer, using a different ISP, and it did the same thing!

What in the world could be the problem?

We see a lot of these problems come through at the ISP I work for. What you should do is:

1. Go in the network settings in the control panel, and remove everything in there. Windows may say that you don't have enought components for a network in there. Just remove everything anyways. Reboot.

2. Open up add/remove programs and click on windows setup. Uncheck communications, choose ok, and reboot.

3. Open up add/remove programs and click on windows setup. Check communications again, choose ok, and reboot. DUN should now be reinstalled.

4. Open up the network setting in the control panel, all you want in there is dial-up adapter and tcp/ip. These should be the settings for tcp/ip:

IP Address - Set to obtain an IP address automatically
WINS Configuration - Disable WINS resolution
Gateway - This should be empty
DNS Configuration - Disable DNS
Bindings - Should be empty
Advanced - Ignore this
NetBIOS - Ignore this

After changing these settings as needed reboot, and everything should be back to normal.

OK. I knew about all of that since I routinely help an ISP with their woes, but I really didn't want to reinstall everything. The man doesn't have his setup disks, and I'd have to take mine over and do it for him.

I'll have to see about that...

Thanks!
