help! monitor heating up

I'm trying to use an old Radio Shack brand VGA monitor and it is very hot and smells like something is burning. The picture looks pretty good though. I didn't have the drivers so I just chose the standard vga setting. I'm running Win95 with a Graphics Blaster Exxtreme video card. Anyone know what might be causing this?

no, sriously... uh, the moniter is probably going dead or something. run it at a lower refresh rate, that could be causing it to heat up... possabily. also, you might want to check the tempature you have it runing at, someone might have turned it all the way up or something. if thats not it, i dont know what to tell ya other than just use it til it breaks.

If I were I would remove the cover and vacuum it

I'm pretty sure there's a huge build-up of dust inside
that's probablt why it smells like burning.

Do this as soon as possible before it catches fire

Also make sure the vents aren't blocked
 
Sounds like it's about to die. I had a 21" that smelled like it was burning & it died 3 days later. (Luckily I had 2 more weeks on my warrenty 🙂)

I really like the monitor coolers from 3dcool.com; they suck the hot air off of your monitor & help keep dust out. I doubt this would help you though, if it is already starting to smell like it's overheating. 🙁
 
My old VGA monitor struggled for about a week and died (It made the same burning smell you described).
 
Take a 12" or smaller fan. Sit it face down on the top of the monitor and let it blow air into the monitor from the top. Set it on the lowest speed. Whatever part in there that is overheating will cool down and you be able to keep your monitor for a while yet. I have two monitors I work on daily with that setup, a Sony 15SF and a Digital 17". They have been running now for three months each without a problem. If I shut the fans down, they start overheating again and flicker and turn themselves off or refuse to turn on at all until I start the fans. Good luck.
 
Wirehead, thats how I kept my old one for a week. I had a big ass fan blowing in to the vent holes. 🙂
