My system that has been running fine for 6 months now has a strange problem. At start-up the system fans all run for about 1 second the shut off. It never posts or attempts to load bios . I removed the motherboard from the chasis and removed everything except 1 stick of memory in slot 1 , the CPU and fan and the 20 pin and 4 pin power plugs. I still get the same results with the motherboard stripped down. I have also swapped around the memory sticks and checked and reinstalled (with new compound) the CPU. (still same results) I did notice that when I unplug the 4 pin connector the system will keep running but of course the cpu never runs. Im thinking I have a motherboard problem or possibly a CPU problem. ( It will also keep running if the CPU is out of the socket)

System = MSI K8n Neo platinum,AMD 64 3400+ w/factory fan, Curcial ballistic ram (3) 256m, Chaintech FX5900 vid. Soundblaster live sound card.

Has anyone seen any problem like this ? or have any good Ideas wheather its most likely the CPU or the motherboard?

Thanks

This is actually a somewhat common problem with the Neo2, but it usually doesn't take 6 months for it to show up.
Do you have the D-link installed? If so what does it hang on?
Also, what are your comlete system specs including PSU ratings?

I agree, check the code your D-Bracket lists. 4 red lights means CPU failure, unless of course the motherboard is damaged. I have the same motherboard and it died on me after about 5 months of use.

Thanks guys

Yes I do have the D Link installed it never really hangs but I see 4 red lights in the one second it runs , four reds then it dies. I also tried subing another cpu fan (plugging it into the cpu header) just in case the original wasnt sending the tach info. Im not sure how these things work but im guessing the mothwerboard is somehow not detecting something important and is sending the shut down sig to the power supply just as quick as you press the start button. I seem to remember when I put this system together about 6 months ago I had the same problem at the first boot up but something unknown changed and it started working ( I thought it might have been a connection or something then) but ive tried all the connections this time and the problem remains.

BTW the Case and PS are Antec 350w True-Power. (could it be PS problem? )

Oh one other thing just before this happened I had a new Saitek X52 joystick seem to lose its USB connection along with my CH Pro rudder peddals (dropped off of the windows game controller list) I re-installed both just fine Went out to dinner and when I came back the computer was shut down. After that i couldnt restart.
Its a toss-up to me if its CPU or MB Im thinking MB as the most likely what do you think?

Thanks Again

Well there are some possible problems with the MSI Neo2's and Antec PSU's. I will explain later.
First, reset the CMOS and retry. It probably won't work, but you want to try that first. Do you have another PSU that you could try? It's possible that the 4 pin connector for the CPU went bad. Now this is very unlikely, but you just want to be sure. Also how old is that PSU and what are the +12V ratings?
If nothing works, you will need to RMA the MB first. The CPU might be bad also, but iy's almost a guarentee that the MB is bad. I'm convinced of this based soley on the history of this series MB. If you get your MB back and it still doesn't boot, then RMA the CPU.
Now about the possible Antec issue:
Read thru this thread, and this one. Unfortunatley the MSI forum link doesn't work because they changed around their site recently. Just read thru these and make your own decision. It seems that alot of people have problems with this boards and Antecs, but alot of people don't also. I had initial problems (same exact thing you are now experiencing but mine happened after one day), and I kept my Antec Tru380W. I decided that IF there was a problem with the Antecs and MSI, it was fixed in the newer Antecs. It's working fine.......for now. I do leave my computer on 24/7 though, as I'm kind of afraid that if I turn if off overnight, it won't restart....lol.

If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me and good luck!!

I must correct a mistake on the motherboard part number Im not sure where I got that this was a Neo-2 I see its for the 939 chip mine is a 754 I went to newegg and checked for sure and the model i bought was the Model "K8N Neo Platinum" (MS-7030) -RETAIL. Sorry for that mistake.

Update: I went and picked up a new Antec 430W power supply just for laughs and since i wanted to bump up the power supply anyway. Well theres no difference in the start-up problem.

Im just curious on what the minimum hardware I really need to make the MB & chip post . Do i need anything other than the CPU&fan ,Memory, & power supply connected?

Is a video card necessary just to post? I know i cant see anything but the Dlink to tell me but i want every thing stripped to a minimum. any other hardware that should be present to post?
Another strange thing i noticed is the power supply fan comes on when the CPU chip is out of its socket when its back in place the fan stops...is this right? Just a thought and wondering if its a clue that the motherboard might be doing something strange.
