Help! Mobile Athlon only posts at 600Mhz

No matter what settings I have in the bios, it only boots up at 600Mhz.
I've tried every multiplier fsb combo out there. I know the problem of a multiplier higher than 12. I've set it to 8,9,10,11. Using fsb of 100,133,166,200.

Most of the time after setting a different mult or fsb and save the settings, the screen just goes blank. Everythings running, but no video. I have to reset the cmos.

HELP!

all the mobiles do that at first. Make sure you have the newest bios and set the multiplier to manual and try. Make sure the heatsink is properly on. What are your temps in bios? Make sure the jumpers (if any) on the motherboard are set to manual or bios set

Everythings set correctly. I've had a 1700+ oc'd on this board before.
Got the latest bios. Temps are only 35c with an SLK800, but it's only 600Mhz 🙂
I think I've got a bad board.

heh, try this, set the multiplier to at least 11 or above... my mobile seems to like doing that more than 10 for some really weird reason on my old mobo. It was a A7N8X...

edit: oops seems you've tried that.

It's a frickin bad chip! Ughhh. Back to newegg it goes.

Tried it in two other nforce2 boards. An msi and a shuttle. No go on either one.
Only thing it would run at is 600mhz.

quite interesting.

if you have the latest bios and everything and it is still stuck at 600 mhz...

then that's weird... but i don't think it's the chip for some reason...

then again it could be...

Is PowerNow or CoolNQuiet installed? 600mhz is the low clock speed used by Laptops for power saving purposes, IIRC.

im going mobo battery. I can't imagine a chip that actually boots won't hit even half it's rated speed.

all mobiles boot at 600 first time...then after changing settings in bios they should boot correctly afterwards but if your batt is dead they won't/

Thats a definate possibility... Although since I'm guessing this motherboard is relatively new its strange the battery would die so quick. Maybe its loose or something?

Didn't know that could be installed. Can you elaborate?

Battery was swapped out from one of the other motherboards just incase. I was thinking that too, because it acted like the settings I was putting in wouldn't take.

There's gotta be something I'm seriously missing. I've never had a bad chip in all the years I've been building.

Even if you bios doesn't support the chip, shouldn't you beable to manually set the multiplier and fsb?
When I get into the bios it says unknown cpu and in red brackets it says 100x6.
In the softmenu I don't have a choice for selecting any default speed- it only allows me to manually set the multiplier and fsb.

BTW- I can take my 1700+ and put into the motherboard and o'c it up to 2.2Ghz without a hitch.

Anyone know what the default multiplier and fsb are on the mobile 2600's?

I'm thinkin I've got a locked chip.

edit- nah that can't be it. I've got a IQYHA 0348SPMW, a known good overclocker.

Incase anyone else runs into this problem...

It was a bum chip. Received my replacement from Newegg and no problems at all.
Runnin smooth at 2.5Ghz.

I just recieved a chip from newegg today and it seems I am having the same problem. Dug, are you sure its a bad chip or is there some kindof setting I am missing in the bios?

*Sigh* Set the multiplier to 11 and the fsb to 200 and, TADA, you have a 3200+. As has been said a half dozen times...all mobile xps default to 600mhz.

I don't buy the "bum" chip theory. It just so happened to be a bum chip that ironically ran fine at the settings it defaults to for everybody but wouldn't go above it? Read the manual and find out how to manually set the multiplier and fsb. There may be a "manual" "Auto" toggle to make manual setting available.

Its not even stable at 600, reboots on a regular basis. I have adjusted my multipliers FSB settings and voltage settings with no luck. I plugged my 1700+ back in that is clocked at 2 ghz and it runs like a charm. I am pretty sure I have a bad chip, but I could be wrong.

What do you mean "no luck"? It won't load Windows? Won't post? Won't save the settings? What Vcore you're trying it at?

Be sure to check for an Updated BIOS, your current BIOS might be having fits because it doesn't recognize the new cpu.

I am using the latest official bios. I will let you guys know what happens when the replacement comes. By no luck I mean the highest clock I was able to get the thing to post at was 1333 (10x133) mhz and even then, just after a few seconds the machine crashes. This was using the default vcore, but even if I push it up it makes no difference. The highest it will post is 1333 regardless of vcore settings. I find it hard to believe the memory or board is faulty since it is rock stable with my 1700+ @ 2ghz (it can prime95 all day).

Maybe you should buy the "bum" chip theory. A new chip solved my problem. I know how to set the multiplier and fsb, I've been doing this a long time. Put the new chip in and everything works perfectly now. Put the old mobile back in, doesn't work. The fact that I tried two other motherboards with the chip would point to the chip itself being bad.
I'm pretty sure turbo is having the same problem I did, as he has the same symptoms.
BTW the new chip works great in my other two motherboards to.
