I'm planning to add a 2nd power supply into my full tower case to power the 10 fans that I have. Just .. you heard right 10 fans. :)

B/c I know that this is a big drain on my current 350 watt PSU, I decided to get another PSU, a very small one.

It turned out that I got the Antec PP-163X 150 Watt MiniATX PSU. Or so I thought it was a MiniATX PSU. The ATX connector seems pretty typical but there is an additional connect (two pin) that may seem to connect to the motheboard as well. Its not the typical 4 pin 12V we see for P4 PSUs (It lacks 2 more pins).

How do I short the wires to trick it to turn on? I know that you can do it for regular ATX PSU by shorting the Green Wire and any ground (Black wire). The wires on this PSU is not even standard either. It has no GREEN WIRE!

Help! Thanks.

One of my power supplies has a gray wire instead of a green one.

See the doodle below. The view is when you look the connector straight on with the clip oriented towards the bottom. The "X" is the wire you need to short.

Hmm .. I'll see if that works ..

But then what is that extra 2 pin connector for? Hmm .. looks like a hybrid between an AT and a ATX power supply.

The power supply has a standard 20 pin ATX connector but also has a extra 2 pin connector that is a seperate cord on it own that comes from the power supply.. which looks like this ..

OOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOO OO

What does that extra connector do? Do I need to short something on that as well to get it power up w/o the motherboard?

I have no clue what that other connector does. I've never seen it before. It's probably meant to power some built-in device that is present on some motherboards.

I have a socket 5 motherboard that has "special power needs." It's a type of AT style that has another 6 pin connector for some reason. My theory is that it has something to do with the built in SCSI, or possibly the built in LAN.

Hmm, I was thinking the same thing too .. much like how the p4 need more power, this may also be the case as well..

However, if that's the case, then the power supply should be able to turn on if i just short the power wire with any ground wire correct?

Interesting, seems more and more likely that I might be dealing with a dead PSU.

Any other suggestions or insight?

Well, shipped back the PSU to the company I got it from .. let's hope it the new one that comes does get damages either ..

UPS seems to be so careless with products these days or were they ever careful?
