Help Meh! (decide what to play)

Ok here is my situation, I played WoW for around 5 years, I really enjoyed it up till this latest xpac, and now can't stand even the thought of logging in. My issue is I love MMO's I love playing with people from every corner of the world, and I love the being able to get together with a group of people and going out and killing a raid boss. However I'm running into some problems I've tried several F2P MMO's and I've tried a good number of P2P, but everyone I run across feels like the devs are letting it rot, or in most cases the end game is either mostly PVP or totally PVP. I am not a competitive enough person that PVP appeals to me, WoW ruined that part of the genre for me. So I'm wondering, is there out in this internet a game that's casual-friendly, PVE focused and well maintained?

Lord of the Rings is >going< Free to play.. is not right now.
you can also still pay to play the game and get perks the f2p crowd do not get.

For the clueless (me) who had to google to find out what TOR is...

I assume you mean, Star Wars:The Old Republic

looks interesting ...hope its better than Star Wars Galaxies.
as for waiting for it.. looks like it could be a while as according to the FAQ
it hasnt even started beta yet

Closed beta (actually targeted "game testing") started last week. Release is spring 2011.

tried LOTRO have a 30 something ranger, problem is the gameplay and general mechanics get really boring for me after about 5 days. I think I'm in the post-wow funk in that I'm trying to find a replacement for it but nothing can hold my interest for long lol. If anyone has a cure please share it. Because I loved gaming, and can't imagine my life without it, but single-player games hold absolutely no appeal to me seeing as they are well single player. Hope I'm not a lost cause :begs:

FFXIV is the closest thing on the horizon that looks like a good fill in to WoW. Most of the other developers seem to be focusing on PvP as you noticed as WoW does that so poorly it is easy to do it better, sadly that leaves PvE in a pretty sad state on most of them. Based on the direction they have taken with FFXI lately and the comments from the developers it seems that XIV will be along the lines of vanilla WoW in terms of how friendly it is to casuals(ie- much easier then most Eastern MMOs, but not face roll like Wrath).

As far as available MMOs that match up with WoW in terms of PvE content that are currently available, there really isn't anything. Honestly, I think I'd be willing to pay to play on a pre Wrath WoW server to hold me over until ToR at the moment.

Ben; I have tried to like lotro but just cant get in to it. tried like 6 times to play it but after a few months and no more than L30 i quit. Mainly for the same reasons that Shadelow mentions.

was going to try wow again to see if that can tide me over, never was into pvp in any game except for Planetside, the pve in that game is pretty good i hear these days. But wasnt sure if i should and now your comment about Wrath (of the Lich King?) made me pause. What is so bad about that? What did it break?

To put it one way they attempted to make it more casual friendly at the same time as keeping hardcore players interested and for the most part they failed, instead of needing drops or tokens for gear you can only need to acquire heroic badges. And all it is now is do thousands of daily quests. But mainly in BC to me the game felt more epic, like to be in a raiding guild actually "meant" something but now every noob and their little sister's teddy bear is in a raid guild that's at the highest tier of raiding. Very depressing when you work your ass off to be the best in your class pulling say 6000 dps and some moron comes into the raid in much better gear then you and only does about 50% of your dps. It's always happened but now it's so common it sickening.

haven't found anything that has captured my attention since WoW and I quit playing that several months before the 1st expansion. I did try to play again shortly after the 1st expansion but couldn't get into it. I can't stand the thought of raiding.

I never cared for WoW, so my opinions may be a bit jaundiced for you.

TOR and The Secret World are the two coming up that I'm following the most. Fallen Earth has gotten some mixed press, again wasn't my thing, but was done by an independant company. Not sure how strong they are still going.

I've been playing Age of Conan and Vanguard recently, and thought both were pretty fun. Vanguard gets only minimal support, but just recently consolidated servers, so there are more folks aobut. AoC just put out the Godslayer expansion, with lots of new content for their higher level players. Both were busts out of the gate, but have had a number of the nasty issues dealt with now.

I didn't like LoTRo enough to subscribe, but will probably play it for free.
YMMV

I understand exactly what you guys are talking about. I've been playing lotro for 3 or 4 days now and it seems like a drag. I don't really have an urge to play it, but I do it anyway thinking "oh maybe this game will get better later on". Will see.

After thinking on it, the MMO market right now is in piss poor shape, all the pay to play mmo's seem to either be rotting on their servers, or are just devoid of people, or both (mostly both) except for WoW... which I will never play again. So I guess that is pretty much that until the only MMO on its way to market that looks even remotely interesting to Guild Wars 2 (ya that star wars mmo looks pretty lame to me, I'm more into the high fantasy style MMO and have never liked sci-fi mmos. That and episodes 1-3 kind of ruined star wars for me, it's REALLY hard for me to enjoy the Star Wars universe now 🙁 ). So ya thanks for all of your suggestions but I guess I'm temporarily retired from MMOs until GW2 is released.

As for getting used to PVP, no thanks, I tried to PVP for some gear for a week back in 2008 and I stopped playing for 3 months because it was so rediculous. I have yet to find a game that does PVP even remotely well.

/cries why can't there be a decent PVE focused F2P game out there?!?!

I'm in a similar boat as you shadelow. I totally agree that the current MMO market sucks balls.

Although I find it interesting that no one in this thread mentioned EverQuest 2. EQ2 is sadly still the best PvE game out right now imo. The fact that no one in this thread has even mentioned it until now makes me laugh at how piss poor Sony's marketing team is. It originally came out about a month before WoW did too. I quit back in early 2008 because I had 3 toons capped at 80 but there has been two expansions released since then. The last one that came out in Feb 2010 (Sentinels Fate) upped the level cap to 90.

What's good about EQ2 is if you buy the latest expansion then you get all previous expansions/game unlike WoW where you're forced to buy each one separately. But like you already touched on in one of your posts, early tiers don't have a lot of activity and unfortunately all MMO's are plagued by that problem.

The two MMO's in development I'm eagerly awaiting are:

Star Wars The Old Republic
http://www.swtor.com/

Rift: Planes of Telara
http://www.riftgame.com/en/

I see you already mentioned that you're not a fan of Sci-Fi MMO's but even though the game is in that type of a setting, it still plays like a fantasy MMO. There are 8 traditional classes who fill familiar roles (ie tank/healer/dps/utility) so it's not unlike EQ or WoW.

The other game I mentioned, Rift, is what I'm most looking forward to. Another surprise that this game hasn't been mentioned till now as well. It's the classic style fantasy MMO I think most people crave.

If you're a very experienced MMO gamer than LOTRO can be a little too casual friendly since it has only a couple of 12 person raids at endgame right now and most of the classes (hunter) are fairly simplistic. If this is your 10th MMO then you'll probably have a lot more fun with a more advanced class (Warden, Burglar, Lore-master, Rune-Keeper). For example, once you get to endgame with a Warden and start working masteries into your gambits there is enormous complexity and a very high ceiling if you are a skilled player.
