Help me work out my E6750's temp!

Recently built a new system with an Asus P5K-E motherboard and C2D 6750 cpu at stock speeds.

Unfortunately the motherboard refuses to report the correct temperature - I'm getting BIOS reports of 17-18 degrees. Tried several different firmware versions but no help.

The HSF on this chip is a Thermaltake Ultra 120 with the supplied thermal grease used, and attached 1200rpm Scythe 120mm fan.

Even still, I don't believe the temp would be that low with air cooling. I tried Speedfan and Coretemp but they didn't help much either (values still too low to be realistic).

I'm going to take it all apart in a few days and clean everything, then use some AS5 paste instead and put it all back together. Can someone with a roughly similar setup tell me what idle/load temperatures I should be seeing? I want to do some overclocking and need to know what sort of temperature offset to use in Speedfan.

Help appreciated!

It really depends on your airflow, I get about 36C on load after a hour thanks to my Papst fans which make it 640M3/H together.

On idle it is basically the room temprature.

So as long as your CPU doesn't go below your room temprature you should be fine with the latest CT beta.

Don't think I've tried anything but the stable release, thanks I'll give it a shot!

Living at the North Pole is cheating!

i dont live in the north pole :/ probably get 10-15C there....

last week my cpu was idling at 13C overnight ;o

I thought you were joking before...

Your temperatures are being reported wrong. A stock CPU wouldn't idle that low on air cooling, let alone one OCed to 3.4GHz.

but at full load max it will reach is 40C....

I run about 36-37 at idle and around 52 gaming, I dont really check temps much tho. If it gets too high im sure the computer will let me know. I also use CoreTemp.

I guess even BIOS doesn't know about the C2D/Q temp offset. YOu have ot dd 15 to the temperature for the correct reading. (Or am I mistaken?) Without overclocking, my CPU idled at about 18 (3+15) C with a zalman cooler, so I guess these chips are really that good.

I researched your issue since I am interested in purchasing the same MB/CPU and found this:

"Coretemp. gives the accurate measurments since its T-Junction for our Processor is Correct (100) and not (85) like Everest or TAT ... cuz 1333FSB CPUs have higher T-junctions ... therefore ur temp when ur OCing is 80 which is a little bit high ... :)

Yeah the beta version of Coretemp should work. Haven't had a chance to try it yet. I didn't realise the "stable" version was so old... released in March 2007.

please post your findings as soon as you're able. I believe this is a gret MB by all accounts and the temp reading is the only problem. If getting accurate readings on temp with this combo is only possible with CT beta, I can live with that. I am considering your feedback in my purchase decision, so any you have is appreciated! In other words, if it works, are you totally happy with your setup?

Yeah, if it works then I'm very happy with it really. This is the only real problem I've had with this motherboard, the BIOS is very OC friendly (good for a newbie like me) and the hardware overclocks well according to reviews.

I'm working 12 hour shifts until Tuesday so probably won't have time to check this until Wednesday morning. Up to you if you want to wait that long!

I am running the E6750 with a TR U-120E with a Scythe S-FLEX SFF21F, Idle I hit ~25C/~27C and 100% orthos after 5 hours, my processor has a very hard time staying @ ~46C, where it averages out @ 45C. I get these readings in a midtower Coolermaster Elite 330 with 4 HD's and a X1900XT with a VF900-cu. 1x 120mm exhaust in the back (push cpu fan, pull rear case fan), and 1x 80mm fan on the side acting as an exhaust.

I have just lapped my cpu to a nice mirror finish, and somewhere next week, instead of using AS-5, I am going to try MX-2 (waiting for my GTS *G92 to come in this Tuesday). I'll report the temps once again.

Just a quick update, since I said I would, that yes the latest Coretemp works for this combination. Idle temps are 25-27 degrees :)

Very happy with this cpu and HSF combination.

Thanks for the reply Shujaa. I just received PK5-E wifi-ap and E6750 in the mail today but havent' had a chance to setup. It is going to be a sweet, screaming setup, regardless of heat! Thanks for entering temps for comparison, too - I wil be checking with ct myself...
