Help me with what's out there :)

I'm sure posts like this pop up frequently and probably get really annoying to the regulars of this forum so I apologize ahead of time Anyway, I want to build a new computer and am not really sure anymore what's out there. I'm basically looking for a decent mb that will support at least a 3ghz p4, or an equivalent AMD if you can convince me My budget is around $300 for the chip and mobo. Not looking for anyhting extreme, just something to get me by the next few years. Thanks for any advice

Oh and it will mostly be used for gaming if that makes a difference.

If its mostly for gaming, then look at the Athlon64's. You get about a 10% perf improvement over an equivalent Intel CPU conversely you'll suffer a 20% decrease in video rendering apps with AMD.

You could probably get an Athlon64 2800+ and a motherboard for $300.
it might be pushing it, but I think it could be done. I only know the Canadian prices, but breaking it down, you would be somewhere around $300 for it I think!
