So I have this work-issued laptop that is running low on disk space. I could get by with moving data to DVD, and freeing up disk space that way. But what I would rather do is get my work to provide me with an external HDD.

How can I word the request to make my request sound justified?

To whom it may concern,

I have recently noticed that the laptop supplied by the company has increasingly become obsolete and is beginning to no longer meet the requirements that I desire to sucessfully store data related to the company. I believe that the addition of external HDD would significantly help our diminishing system. KKTHNXBAIBBQ.

what size HD and how much is it filled?
and what do you need the space for?

20GB, ~85% full... That's after uninstalling everything I haven't used recently and deleting temp files and such.

The extra space would be for breathing room more than anything.

I'd much rather get a new laptop with a bigger HDD, but I figure that would be a harder sell than an external HDD.

what kind of work would you be doing on it?

Does that really matter? I'm the only IT guy for a small organization, so I do pretty much a little of everything. That might explain why I have so many different things installed on my laptop.

yeah...i was just wodnering if you were onyl doing like word docs on it but wanted the extra space for games or music or something you really shouldn't have on a work PC

You're the only IT guy in a small organization? Why not just go talk to someone with the authority for an external HD and ask them to let you purchase one and get reimbursed or something?

That was the point of this thread... to get some ideas for when I approach the powers that be...

Maybe asking for potential uses of an external HDD that could apply to my work will get some more useful responses?

The only thing I can come up with is that it would be more convenient for me to have an external HDD than to burn stuff to a DVD, and that it's cheaper than a new laptop. Not too convincing, eh?
