Programmed computer/upgraded "superchip"
Hi flow fuel injectors/fuel pump/fuel pressure regulator
Gapless piston rings
Oversized valves
MSD 6A Ignition w/ blaster 2 coil
If 5spd get an ACT2600 clutch
New shocks, strut bars, control arm, springs, bushings, etc (just changing shocks will not make your car handle better; only to a small degree)
Cold-air intake (true cold air, not warm air conical filter)
Underdrive pulleys
Exhaust headers, catalytic converter, exhaust piping, muffler (2 1/2" and hi-flow cat)
Larger throttle body
Tougher motor mounts
Forged pistons for higher compression
High performance camshaft
Engine balancing

Take your pick...

Edit; As far as handling goes, higher performance tires will not only increase handling capability but also acceleration. I suggest Cooper Cobras for their blend of performance/ride comfort/cost. But there are many other brands that are better for either of the reasons.

Complete waste of money.

How often is modding a car not a complete waste of money?😉

tires are one of the most important things on the car. acceleration though? i think you mean to say traction. better tires will also let you stop quicker as well because they will grip the road bettter.

Well, it's especially so on a car like a VW.

They help in acceleration as to prevent the wheel from spinning without grip (this happens when accelerating from a roll, only very slightly) and it allows for a higher rpm launch without spending time laying drags.
