Sounds like you need new drivers for the XP Box.....Get rid of the Red X and then come back I am sure you will need more help 🙂

Windows XP has drivers included for the card, i didnt use the cd that came with the card at all.
I'm wondering if its an IRQ conflict, but is there such a thing in windows XP?

Since you have a few NIC like cards attached, make sure that they appropriate protocols are associated with the appropriate card.
You say that there is nothing connected to your other NIC, so no protocols are necessary for it.
Check it in Control Panel -> Network... It will list a few protocols such as TCP/IP and Microsoft Networking, and which card that protocol is associated with. Make sure that all protocols you need (I assume TCP/IP and Microsoft Networking) are attributed to at least the NIC that you use.

Hope that helps

My experience has been that if you have 2 network cards in the same machine and one of them is doing nothing the machine gets confused. If you look at the properties of the extra cards you will find that both will have the same address assigned to it and no matter what you cannot change it. This may not be the case for everyone but sure was for me. I might also say that you are in the wrong forum. This should be posted in the Networks forum, there is a lot of really smart people there for networking.

I have a diamond phone network card in 2 of my pc's. One with xp and another with me.

XP has drivers alread in it. There must be some kind of hardware conflict or something.

As far as setting up the network set up xp and then use the xp cd on your 98 machine to set up the network on that one. If you insert the xp cd and the screen pops up it is something like choose other something or other. After you get it all set up make sure to do a windows update to install patches (universal plug and play) or smething like that.

wouldn't it be easier to just use a crossover card on two ethernet cards

set up by control panel in xp ie... add network sharing internet (follow wizard)
make disk in wizard then use floppy made by wizard to install on 98 machine?

it worked 4 me and much simpler.

only if you are doing only 2 machines more than that you need hub or switch

oh yeah crossover cable(got mine at staples ) 11..00 with tax

just a thought also get 100 mb across network

hope this helps

reason i gave this config is its really simple to set up and at 11.00 a ten foot cable its cheap too
and better at 100mb than 10mb at least in my opinion

For these cards XP does have drivers that work for them just fine. If you have a red X in your device manager over the card, it has nothing to do with drivers. A Red X indicates a disabled device. It would be a yellow ! for bad drivers. Enable the device in the device manager.

The Windows XP error "network cable disconnected" will ALWAYS come up in your system tray if you don't have a cable plugged into your card. Annoying as heck but a fact of XP. I guess MS figures, why do you have a NIC installed if you aren't using it?
