Hi guys!

I just put together a new setup- ECS K7S5A, Duron 1000 and a Visiontek GF4 MX 440. I love the card so far- stable, fast, and it looks great. I am having an annoying problem though. Whenever I press the start button upon exiting any game, the left side of the start menu (where it says windows 98 on the blue stripe) is garbled. Sometimes it is white, sometimes black, etc. This happens with any game-D3D or OpenGL.

At first I thought it was a heat issue since the Visiontek has no fan. So I hooked up a small socket 7 fan to the heatsink. The card barely gets warm now, and I still get the problem.

Then I tried the newest drivers...nVidia 28.32. Same problem.

This is on a fresh install of Win98SE-so it can't be the result of leftover drivers from another vid card. The only other drivers installed were 27.something drivers, and those were completely uninstalled.

Not a power issue-I have an Antec TruePower 430W PSU.

Any ideas? As I said, I have no other problems. The card and the system run like a champ.

Ok not much I can think of unless you want to try different Nvidia drivers or some bios tweaks like disable all video shadowing in bios, disable system bios cacheable.

Ok that's worth a shot. I also tried running at AGP 2x instead of 4x, and still got the smae result.

Yep. Latest BIOS is installed.

I seem to have fixed the problem. I uninstalled the 28.32 drivers, installed the AGP drivers, installed the leaked 29.41 drivers, and then installed the AGP drivers again.

So far, I haven't gotten a messed-up start menu once. I usually don't like to use non-official drivers, but the 29.41s seem great so far. Besides fixing the problem (knocking on wood), my OpenGL performance has increased by a few FPS, especially in UT, where I get 8-10 FPS more. D3D performance is about the same, +/- a FPS or two, depending on the game.

I also got the highest score I've ever gotten in 3DMark 2001SE.

We'll see if this fix will last. Wish me luck!
