Help me with my CUSL2 problems!

I just upgraded to a P3 700E cC0 w/ 256 MB PC133 rev3 on a CUSL2 in a new case. those four things are the only new components to my system. everything else, such as PCI cards and the HDD, CD-ROM, zip, and floppy drives i transfered into the new case. now to the problems🙁

First and most important, my zip drive and CD-ROM arent being detected. i dont know if that is a windows or a BIOS thing. it shouldnt be windows b/c i just moved my HDD, i didnt reformat, so everything should be the same. here's what happens: the system searches for new drivers everytime i restart b/c i moved my cards all around. while searching, it asks me to put the win98 CD in the CD-ROM. but once windows loads all the way and i want to search for files or folders, windows only gives me the option to search the floppy and HDD's (a:\, c:\, and d:\ respectively - i have my HDD partitioned). it will not display an e:\ or f:\ (removeable (zip) and CD-ROM respectively).

My second, and not as important problem is: how do i disable the onboard video? i came across something called onboard VGA in the chipset options in the BIOS with the option to enable or disable it. is this what i'm looking for?

any advice would be appreciated...thanks everyone🙂

Hi Bud. Disable VGA in the bios and make sure AGP/PCI is in that order.

Also, are you coming from a board with a different chipset?

You need to install the .Inf update driver from the CDrom, but it looks like the drive is not available, so you may need to download the drivers from Asus, instead. Then you may have a different problem, and that is you will be prompted for your win98 disk too.

Me personally, I'd do a clean install, which is what I do everytime I do a major upgrade. Back up any of the important stuff first.

You won't happen to have your Win98 install directory copied to hard drive do you?

I always have a copy of mine on a spare drive, so if I get prompted for the disk, it's always there, without having to have the CDrom. I believe once you can successfully install the .inf update, your devices will be there.

Some of those drivers, if you point to C:\windows\System will be in there.

Regarding your problems with the ZIP drive check the BIOS and look to see which IDE port it is connected to, the primary or secondary. Press enter on the name of the port that has the ZIP drive. There is a setting that reads something like Set drive as... it will be probably set to auto if you press enter here it will give 2 other options Floppy or Fixed disk. Set it to fixed disk and it should work properly. If you have a VGA card plugged into the AGP port it will automatically disable it and you will not have to disable through the BIOS. As for the CDROM i am not sure what that might be could also be a BIOS setting. Hope this helps.

I had a similar problem with my CUSL2-c when I transferred everything over from my BF6. I think the problemn was that the secondary ide channel was not functioning in windows. Try putting the boot HDD and CD ROM on the primary channel using a normal cable (non UDMA 66). Then install the 815 drivers off the CD which should then enable your secondary channel. I have had no problems since and I did not need to reinstall windows.

Hope it works.

well i could have plugged the ribbons in wrong, but i figured with a 40-1 or 80-2 pin setup it would be impossible to plug one in backwards...but i'll chack anyways. i know i plugged the HDD into IDE1 and the CD-ROM and ZIP into IDE2, so if the ribbons are plugged in correctly, i guess i'll be hunting online for updated .INF drivers...do i need to look for anything more specific than that? or will it be simple finding these drivers? by the way, i think ASUS.com is down right now.🙁

Sounds like you're missing the 815 chipset drivers. WindowsME has these included by default, but if you're running 98, you need the 815 drivers. Also, as usual, compuwiz is right on with everything he mentions, I too would do (and did) a complete windows reinstall.

Hint: keep your apps and OS on a separate partition than your data, and then GHOST your app/OS drive onto your (larger) data partition once you get everything all tweaked.

Hint2: reinstall after major upgrades, and always use new drivers for everything in your system, including the chipset...

Hint3: try www.asus.com.tw 😀

ok i have downloaded some IDE drivers at www.asus.com.tw, and i also downloaded the 815 drivers (version 6.1) from www.intel.com...thanks for the link subhuman 😉 so i'll try these and update everyone on my progress. by the way, i disabled the onboard VGA, so thats not a problem anymore.

hey Steve...as you can see my system is up and running. i just have to work out a few driver issues, but other than that everything is fine so far. i'll post something on my OCing adventures once i work out all the little bugs i have right now. thanks for the CPU 🙂

yes it says that some devices are using MS-DOS compatibility, but surely there must be another way to get my drives to show up without reformatting. besides, what does this dos compatibility mean anyways? just b/c something is compatible through DOS doesnt mean it cant be windows compatible...

Just a question but are you trying to install the 815 drivers while the system is OC`d??? If so run it at stock speed and try it then...

well i think i'm going to have to reformat. i really wanted to try this without having to do that, but i guess it is very difficult to switch mobos without doing a clean install of windows and wiping the HDD. i tried a few things to get windows to recognize my CD-ROM and zip drives, but when i rebooted, it got to windows, started locating hardware and software for my sound card, and restarted itself before anything could happen. so basically i cant boot fully into windows b4 my computer restarts itself, so i guess i'll just have to reformat. thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

Sunny129, if you have not already formatted the HD, you might want to boot into safe mode and go to device manager and remove all devices and reboot. I know that the general consensus of the people on this board is to re-format a HD when changing chipsets, but I think it can be done successfully this way also. I have personally went from a BX chipset, to a VIA chipset, and finally to a 815E chipset by doing this with no ill effects. It sure is a lot easier!! 🙂🙂

The MSDOS compatability problem, if it is with the HD, then boot from a floppy system disk and do a fdisk /mbr, this will sometimes clear up that problem.
