help me with my Canon A40

My A40 in AUTO mode cannot auto-focus correctly. Everytime I push the button halfway, it's supposed to double-beep and let me know it's focused and ready to take the picture. It never does, not even when on a tripod with sufficient lighting aimed directly at an object. The lower light is always flashing yellow.

Also, I try to zoom in on images like a cellphone number pad. It's out of focus (with problem above). After I take the picture, I can't even make out the numbers/letters on the keypad.

What's potentially wrong here ? Thanks.

The A40 had a focusing problem close up. Check the canon website to make sure you have the latest firmware. I suggest you use spot focusing too. Reduces seeking.

I can avoid using AF if I set it to manual mode, but that's not what I want to use.

The focusing problem exists on objects at any distance. It is ALWAYS flashing yellow on the lower indicator, no matter what I try. The upper is solid orange (normal).

cell phone number pad = you have ot put it in macro
try switching between multizone focusing and spot focusing?

if that doesnt work...send it for repairs
