they want to tack on a 400$ prep free for a 11200$ van. shouldnt the van be preped and ready to go allready?

I mean when I sell a car I dont say ok 2000$ + a 100$ prep fee. some one would say your nuts man. right?

Have you talked to them? I mean when I sit down to negotiate, I dont even consider the dealer prep fee, if the salesman brings it up, I say, "No we are going to start at this point <the number without the dealer prep fee> or I will just special order one and not have the dealer prep done to it.

Fvck em, take a walk. Either they sell it to you for your price or they got no sale. I was in the same boat as you. The dealer was the only one that had the type of conversion van that I wanted. No private sellers had one. They held firm on their too high price. I wanted the van, so I had to buckle. If I had it to do over, I'd just sit tight and wait for a private owner to sell me one.

Around here the dealers try to tack on a doc fee after you have agreed on a price. I just get up and walk. Sometimes they will drop it others not. It is more profit for them.

thanks guys. he sound like there gonna stick with there Prep fee. He claims that they will do the right thing on the van as fast as replacing brakes and such. but that sound like $hit. dosent a dealer have to make a car/van ready to sell anyways? I mean that when I sell a car for top $$$ i make it look and perform as best as I can.

It looks like if he will not budge on the dam fee Im walkin. Its a ford E250 van theres a bunch out there. Ill just have to wait longer thats all.

Thanks again guys much appreaseated

I would offer $10,800 for the van + the $400 fee = $11,200.

Surely there are other vans out there.

Negotiations are just that. If you are negotiating, then continue to negotiate. If you have signed something that states a price, and then they want to tack on dealer prep, or undercoating, or some other charge, then you do not have to agree. Prior to anything written, it's considered negotiations only. If they want to add on a dealer prep, then add on a customer annoyance fee.

Yeah lotust, you da man! But, what do you want to bet that when you tell them to shove it, they find a way to forego that "prep" BS? I'd still tell him to shove it after that crap. Suit yourself, but I promise you I will NEVER buy a used car from a any dealer again.

If you buy from a dealer, you pay too much. They're not a charity and you can't believe the money they make--LOTS more than off new cars.

"dosent a dealer have to make a car/van ready to sell anyways"

Yes, they have to make sure the vechile is safe befor they sell it to you, due to warranty. (they don't have to clean or oil it, but it would be in their interest to do so)

Check out the van early Sat morning, and last week of the month (this is when the sale men hungry for customer).

Find every little detail regarding the van to complaint bout, and remember to mention the faults when you are doing the paper after.

Tell them that you saw another van at a competion dealer that is similar to the one you are looking at that is cheaper, and you are weight/comparing your options.

Bring a friend for a second opion (it is best to have a second set of eyes ears to look out for the flaws.)

If you play the game right, you might be able to get that van for $9000-9500.

I use the tactic above to save myself a good chunk of money on my current car.

...2 years a go I bought an excelent condition 1990 Taurus for $2000.00 (with all work papers, new tranmission, and a set of almost new tires on rims). It was a private sale and the car was well under priced...the owner was asking $3200.00 for it. (I saw 2 similar model, same year at the dealerships, and both was in much poorer condition priced at $4500 & $5000.)

Don't be a sucker...You are the customer and they need you it is not the other way around. And, please don't tell them how much money you could spend, when they ask you how much & at what price rannge you ar looking at, becaues they will use it to rape you.

See yourself as hunter and the sale men are scavengers...don't let them turn you into prey:)
