Help me with Battleforge, crashes to desktop on startup

Hi all.
I have been interested in Battleforge for a while, and the basic game recently became available for free. I downloaded the files from EA and the verify procedure said all the files were OK. However, when I hit play, the game just crashes to desktop and gives an error message that "Battleforge has stopped working". (Duh, I would never have guessed that after it crashed to desktop!) I downloaded the files twice to make sure there was not an error in the download and got the exact same problem both times.

I am using Vista 32bit, E4500, 9800GT, 3 gb of ram. I believe my graphics driver is up to date or maybe one release old.

Has anyone else tried to play the game and had this problem?? Any ideas on how to solve it? There are posts on the EA forum about a similar problem, and apparently they solved it, but what they actually did to solve the problem was not very clear from the posts.
BTW, is the game any good---is it even worth trying to get it to work on my system?

I got BattleForge with my video card.....Haven't touched it yet........Don't you have to pay for cards in game or some crap?

Amazingly, I finally got the game to run by running it in compatability mode for Windows XP service pack 2. This is very strange since it was designed for Vista. I still get occasional stuttering, but apparently this is a common problem. I have a 9800GT, and apparently the game does not play nice with nVidia cards. At least the game is playable. It is kind of fun, although all I played was the tutorial.
